This was covered. If you're going to maximum realism here most scents would decay more rapidly than the odors on the ground. The reason for this is our imperfect abilities to preserve evidence. Even with modern methods we're not the best at it and there are plenty of cold cases that happen as a consequence. If you're going for maximum realism then take into consideration that there are well known serial killers that the police were never able to find even after they were given a ton of clues and hints.

That said, realism =/= good gameplay. Good gameplay lets people sleep at night and enjoy an integral aspect of the game. There's a good balance between criminal activity and domestic activity. 45-90 Days of potential death that has to be worked around with a bug does not constitute a good balance.

What about battering a person to not let him steal any more stuff from your claim? Do you want to say there is a counter measure (or counter mechanic) to crime? (after the crime is committed of course)

Isn't battery on your own claim scent free? Or is that only if they attack your first? Either way, the scent is on your own claim and you just have to keep people from collecting it until it fades from the map, which is a lot less time than 90 days, but I forget exactly how long battery does last...
