Surveyor to his most generous majesty the King

I thought it might be fun to have an additional NPC in town; the colonial surveyor. Essentially his role would be to show who are the greatest landowners on providence (as measured by total personal claim sizes). I'd think to be included you would need to register as a landowner. This would incur the following costs and benefits:

- Pay a fee of 100 silver once off to register
- Have your overall tax bill reduced by the amount you pay on land tax every week (any and all transactions) up to a maximum of zero tax.
- Your name up in lights on the top 10 or 20 list with all the scrutiny that brings.
- If you make it to top spot you get a land magnates neck chain to show that you are the daddy (maybe this could add +100 affluence or something), but only one per account.
- This could be a precursor to another mechanic, voting, where only registered landowners are allowed to vote (no idea on what yet though, maybe just cosmetic things to start in the form of events)

In addition, a new surveyor shop kit could be made available, with items like iron measuring chains, steel-tipped pens or brass-bound compasses. Maybe a slottable item, an inspirational and something with a more practical use.

I think these could definitely add to the flavour of the game.

I think an "age" requirement would be good, and/or a skill.

Something to bar entry to alts/overly "young" characters.

I'm not sure just where J.C. would like to draw the line, but I was thinking somewhere around "Compacts and Constitutions level".

That's not really that high, but it also requires SOME investment to get a character who wants to get into politics.

The sheer age of the character might also play in, but again, I don't know what would seem "right".

And if we don't care to have our names in "Lights"?

Will we be given the option to avoid it- and the perks...

Frankly I'd rather pay the increased taxes than be top of someone's kill list

I believe that's why he included the 'register' part of the idea.

I'd vote for biggest single claim rather than total claims... In that case being at the top of a list and targetted by folks seems much more warranted than if you just happen to have a lot of little pclaims scattered all over. It may lead to "size races" where people keep throwing more and more money into their pclaim making it bigger and bigger just to try to get a bit ahead... And then once the cost get significant enough and the growth gets slow enough it'll make actively raiding/TBFing them more attractive. Might be tricky to figure out where it is without a mechanism for that though (since unlike towns, pclaims don't have names) Maybe it could give a scent-like tracking arrow to the top 3 or so?

I guess it gets a bit redundant with top authority towns though...
