Any shot corrodes and weakens the barrel. Keep in mind all, a majority minus the energy/kinetic ones that are currently being worked on, rely upon combustion. The shot and the powder, along with he amount of pressure produced, heat also plays into this, is what corrodes and weakens the barrel and chamber; along with what ever components are around the area that combustion takes effect. Now what would kill you is if you somehow manage to get any shot lodged in the barrel and the pressure does not push it out. You will end up with the chamber exploding and either with a warm corpse filled with metal fragments or a pissed off shooter bleeding to death with a concision and broken skill fragments here and there.

Steel was not really used. Hunters may have tried it but it was, still is to a certain point, not considered preferable. Steel was expensive as hell in the past as well which made lead even better of a choice. I can shoot you with a lead ball, carve it out of your body, and reform it. I can't do that with steel very easily. Steel is also useful as cartridges but that was not exactly in play for muzzle-loading. Even then some people prefer brass cartridges. (Easier to expand when loading and reloading.)

I'm still waiting for a blunderbuss to fire forks and spoons at other folk. Recycling at its best! Might even throw in a few sticks for good measure.
Keep calm and stay peachy.

Should be able to make iron balls that can be fired from a sling shot.

Should do much more damage than a rock and have a % chance to recover it when butchering. (If it can be butchered)
