Getting back to topic, the arena is ment to be entertainment for spectators. Paticipants should have some rewards when taking on difficult tasks.

Some gambling on competitions could be interesting. No idea how appropriate it is for the time frame.

Make it PvP fighting at fight club, with player gambling on the side (with the NPC taking a cut) and I think ya got something viable. And it would be yet another silver sink, you can never have too many of thouse in a game economy.
