It is predictable though. The last item placed in inventory is the first one used in crafting. So, if you want to use two particular berries for a berries-on-a-straw, pick each one up, put it down again, and when you select the recipe, they'll be highlighted. Also, all main inventory items are used before backpack items, this takes precedence over when the item was put in inventory.
