can't enter my own house after the crash

Postby skyzefawlun » Thu Sep 13, 2012 10:44 pm

Hi,

So I logged off last night in my house as I always do, and after the crash/rollback today when I logged on I got the "your last position was blocked" message so I respawned at my claim, only to find that myself, and nobody in my community could now enter my house. In our group, everyones' houses are fine, but mine seems to be... locked. So... how can I get in there and get all my goods? I have three cupboards in there, and while I remember reading something about a bug where you can destroy a house and the cupboards will remain, I'd rather not have to shuffle all those goods and move things around into a new house. Any chance I could get a little help here? I'm pretty sure this is crash/rollback related, and I'm pretty horribly screwed at this point, as almost everything I had was in there.

Well, I'm not sure if somebody did something but I can now magically get back into my house... I guess not playing for almost 24 hours fixed it...

It might just be a bug with the Java, if it happens again you just need to go into your processes and make sure to end all running Java programs. It probably was registering something different if you get more then one going.

Yes, sometimes you can get more then one java programs running and it crosses paths and doesn't register things correctly. I've have deep water appear over my boxes before making them unable to get into, but when I ended all the Javas and logged back in the water had disappeared and everything was running normal again.

Oh, I fully understand how having multiple instances of java running could cause some strange issues. I had stated in my first post though that this started immediately following the server hard crash and rollback, and that everyone in my community was unable to enter my house. I'm pretty sure the fact that several people were having the exact same issue, and that it was triggered by a crash/rollback of the server, would indicate that the issue was server side, and not client side.

I do appreciate you trying to help though <3

This actually has nothing to do with Java and is a client/server communication issue. Have you seen the screenshots with Boston being on a giant cliff or in the middle of wilderness? Same bug. It may be a client computer performance issue in some cases, too. You can easily run multiple Java apps with no issues as long as you have the processing power.

it actually might be a case of the interior of his house being nuked, although i hope that is not the case. you should pm loftar to check it out.

The problem sorted itself out after about 24 hours (or a GM/dev came and fixed it and didn't say anything) so this issue, while still mysterious, has been resolved on my end. It's still something worth looking into though, as there is always a chance of this happening to somebody else.

The problem is that is considered an intermittent bug at this point and unless an extreme stroke of genius or pure luck occurs, it won't get fixed (assuming there is a real bug in the server code here and it wasn't some result of the rollback on the database). Only so much can be done to keep a database backed up without going into massive high end server systems. I think CCP spent tens of millions on their last server upgrades a few years ago and a lot of custom programming to get it all together.
