nothing happens when I hit New character

Postby McCreason » Sat Mar 29, 2014 3:02 pm

Hello there,

My problem is this:

I start up the launcher, enter my username and password. The launcher is then authenticating, connecting and finally brings me to the character selection screen. Since I've not been around since the wipe, there is only the option to create a new character. When I click it, the outline of the black figure flash white (e.g. the visual effect plays) but then nothing happens. I can click it again and again, nothing. I've waited several minutes but still nothing happens.

I use Java 7-51 and had the issues Kandarim described in his post "How Oracle screwed up and how to fix it ". After following the instructions there, I get a warning after starting the launcher, asking me if I'm certain to launch this application. If I agree, the salem launcher opens and everything seems fine. (Just saying in case it is relevant)

Things I tried so far:
- reinstalling Java
- reinstalling/ redownloading the salem launcher
- using an existing Java 6-21 build, that lingered on my harddrive
- deinstalling the Java 6-21 build, and installing a fresh Java 7-51, after all Java builds had been deinstalled
- enders client (get's exactly as far as the vanilla one)
- creating a hole new account (since mine was early closed beta)

So if you have some ideas what I could have overlooked, please share them with me. I'm really looking forward in playing on providence.

Post hardware and OS information please. Include software version numbers when they can be found.

okay, let's see:

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, Service Pack 1
System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: GA-970A-UD3
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 16382MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11

Videocard name: AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
Manufacturer: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Chip type: AMD Radeon Graphics Processor (0x6819)
Driver File Version: 8.17.0010.1247 (English)
Driver Version: 13.251.0.0
DDI Version: 11
Driver Model: WDDM 1.1

Now for Software:
Java 1.7.0_51
Salem launcher is fresh from the website (today)

Plus:
I tried it on my laptop and it worked fine. So I suppose it's something with the machine, not the network.

Well, today it's working just fine.

Which is strange, since I restarted my computer and my network yesterday without any effect. So I don't now what fixed the problem.

Thank you for dealing with me MagicMan. The topic can be closed I think.

It could have been a corruption in one of the files. Sometimes it happens, and when you flush the cash or just try again another day, things work fine. Java Web Start doesn't have any built in integrity check when it downloads content. Removing and then reinstalling Java doesn't always clear the cache.

Glad things are working now.
