Since you haven't stated what you have and haven't tried, here's a couple of things.

First, when you get corruption in textures like this, it's often a video driver problem. Make sure you have the latest version. If you have questions, you can post your system information here and someone familiar with it might have some suggestions.

Second, and the easier fix, try flushing Salem from Java's cache. Sometimes a file gets corrupted and needs to be reloaded to be fixed. (Java doesn't have internal data verification.) I'm not sure this one will work, which is why I list it second.

Do you have a fireplace lit? I get the same problem when I have one going. Its kind funny though. I can play a lot more graphically intense games on my computer. Salem runs great on my computer. Can have shadows on, great water quality, but as soon as a little dirty fart of smoke comes out of a fireplace it screws up the graphics on the icons. How about a option to disable that little bit of smoke that doesn't matter. You have to update your driver to play Salem. Downgrade java to get a ground leveling tool. What happened to the old days when companies released games that catered to players instead of players catering to game developers. No wonder why so many people stopped playing this game.

First, when did you not have to have an updated driver to play a game? Second, you don't need to "downgrade Java" to get a ground leveling tool. It's built into the system (yes, a bit of visual help is needed at times), but Kandarim's client is supposed to run on Java 7 without major issues if you're looking at modded clients.

I getting the same problem. I am using normal salem with no mods. I have windows 8 but please help me find if I need video card updates instead of being rude like you were to the OP and assumed we know as much as you about computers Magicman. Attack new players with problems instead of help them. I liked his video.

Before anyone can help you find a driver, we'll need to know what kind of system you have. I'm not familiar with Win8 yet, so I may not be the best person for this job, but I'll help if I can. At a minimum, we need to know what video card you have or integrated processor. In the case of a manufactured system (such as HP, Toshiba, etc), the make and model may be helpful, too, as some manufacturers use custom drivers.

I understand the Windows Update does pretty good with updating hardware drivers now, but I've still heard a few complaints from some. Feel free to try this route if you don't have it active. You may already have the best driver available.

Side note: It wasn't the OP. It was someone else thinking they were "being helpful". Read the thread and pay attention, please. (Lokk did have a couple of useful suggestions, and the particle animations have been a source of issues for some players.)

Don't listen to anything that Magic dude says. I had the same problem. They will say its your computer and its your driver just because they are lazy and don't know whats going on. Don't use the normal salem client. Use the Ender client. If you use the Ender client those icon problems you have will go away magically.

When it works just fine for 90+% of the players, odds are it is a driver issue. There may be something that can be done in the client to adjust for this, but the solution has yet to be found. I have confidence that if a reasonable fix can be found, it will be implemented.

Yes, ignore the one person that consistently bothers trying to help people in the Help! forum.
He (and me too! ) suggests driver issues so often, because they simply are so often at fault.
For way too long, updating nVidia drivers to their latest version broke jogl functionality.

Actually it happens to me too on the basic client, my drivers are up to date, and I'm not using nVidia

But don't attack MagicMan on what he says, he's not aggressive nor anything towards people asking for help, and he's doing a great job at taking care of answering people the most accurately possible. Don't be that ungrateful noob who misunderstand his job
