That might have to do with the new texture loading system. Perhaps your system is having problems with it?

I noticed the same. Granted I'm using ender's client so it could be that.

Most of the graphics are the same though - and the game is now using half the memory so no complaints here.

The new texture loading system was implemented last night with the latest update.

The textures look less sharp now than before so I wonder if it's possible that it's an antialiasing issue?

Well, I did turn on trilinear filtering on some textures when I went over them, which is most likely what you're reacting to.

I do agree that such filtering has some problems, especially when it comes to sharpness, but on the other hand it makes the textures flicker a lot less with movement, which is a nice thing. I sometimes don't really know which is worth more. It's also more GPU-friendly, however, and taxes your texture caches less and thus makes rendering a bit faster.

Still a lot of lower end GPUs out there that can't run a lot of filtering along with higher graphics. Not everyone has $1500 for a good gaming laptop or $300-$500 for the latest desktop GPUs. Go with the choice that gives the most performance for the default, I say. With the graphics being moddable, you guys could provide the raw graphics for players that want to use their higher performance hardware (assuming they can force filtering in their drivers without crashing the engine).
