As you can see from the attached pic, all my action tiles have blanked out. I tried restarting the program, and the machine but no luck. I have been happily playing for 2-3 weeks before this happened. I am using Windows 8 with an Intel Graphics 4000 card.

Help!

Has the video driver been updated recently? If so, there may be a bug in the driver and the older version may need to be reinstalled until the bug is fixed. (Not familiar enough with Win8, but some utilities will auto-update hardware drivers without notice or the old driver didn't get removed properly and can cause issues.) Have you tried flushing the Java cache and reloading Salem? If you're using Enders or another custom client, try deleting the .salem folder or downloading the client again.

It looks like there's something wrong with Nvidia Geforce update from a few days ago.
I run win7, so I manually did a clean driver install when I got the update notification.

Ever since, I get the weirdest **** in Salem.

- every so often (twice an hour maybe), my mouse buttons go unresponsive. Only 1 out of about 5 left or rightclicks are registered. The rest of the mouse still functions fine, including rotating the view with middle mouse. Outside of salem, the mouse also still works fine, even while the problem is occuring in Salem
- textures aren't loading. For example, the floor of my birck mansion was black, and most of the time the mouse thing happens, the login screen is all black with only some text visible as well
- lag in my base is much much worse than before, and I don't even have cotton growing
- parts of the text of the skill names from the skill screen, and / or parts of the text from chat (which for me is located at the bottom of the screen) flash at the top of the screen
- I had a few crashes without any form of error log. program just closed
- I had a few strange error reports, which I posted in a bug thread 2 days ago

Exiting the program, and restarting fixes most of above issues for a while, except the increased lag.

I tried
- turning off vertical sync, since I noticed the clean driver install's default options turned it on
- checking if all other Nvidia options are right
- uninstalling Java, and reinstalling
- uninstalling Jave, running CCleaner, installing Java, running CCleaner
- doing an extensive virus and spyware scan

So far, nothing worked.
I might have to try and get the old driver version.

EDIT: FIXED

Ok - video driver last updated in March, so it's not that. Flushed cache and redownloaded Salem. Same result.

Is there any reason why it would be connected to the fire, because it seems to happen when I light it, ie when it's finally lit?

It might. This may need to be reported to Intel for a fix in the OpenGL drivers.

Some older graphics cards had issues with proper drivers or bugs in the OpenGL implementation and didn't handle the smoke/particle animations very well. I was compiling a list of cards that weren't working, but people aren't very forthcoming all the time with GPU models.

Just to clarify, the chip discussed in this article (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33642_7-57 ... rom-intel/) is the one in your system? (Intel Ivy Bridge HD 4000 GPU).

So far as I can tell. I'm going on Device Manager, which says its "Intel (R) HD Graphics 4000".

The article about the GPU I linked should be the one, then.

This may definitely be something that needs to be reported for a driver fix, then. You should check for the latest driver and install it to make sure. If you haven't installed drivers from Intel (have the drivers installed that came with Win 8 instead of the latest driver), then you definitely should update the drivers. In doing a bit of digging, there have been a few other reported errors with this card and OpenGL. I can't really spot which have been resolved or if any can be said to be directly related to this at this time.

The issues like this that have been reported in the past have been for older model GPUs such as the older ATI 9xxxx or Intel 963 chipsets (circa 2006 or so). A few newer integrated GPUs have had issues, but not of this nature.
