I just had the curious experience to put a brain into a bucket of tanning fluid (expecting it to be 10%, just needing another bucket load of water after being put in the tub) ... resulting concentration was 9%, and with another bucketload of water it was 4,5% ... huh?

There is some rounding problem when you use water and brain separately on tanning tube.
So, first use the braion on bucket full of water and then pour it into tub

when you take the "tanning fluid" from the bath it loses some % of concentration.
Edit: You want your brain back or something?

...
Did you guys even read my post properly or did you just catch 3 or 4 words guessing the rest?
i took a full bucket of 5% tanning fluid, and added another brain, getting 9% fluid ...

You can't add a brain into a BUCKET of tanning fluid. So you were adding it into tanning TUB.
Besides, if you have water and add something resulting in 5% mixture, and then you add this thing again, you will not get 10% mixture. Of course, it seems to be borked here, because adding brain doesn't increase mixture's volume but whatever.

yeah right ... I can't possibly know what i've done ...
du'h ... I KNOW what i did ... i had a bucket of 10l of 5% concentration tanning fluid ... i added a brain, getting 10l of 9% concentration Tanning fluid, instead of 10% as expected ...

Here's what math says. 10 litres of 5% tanning fluid, which has a weight of X, meaning there is 0.95X of water and 0.05X of brains.
Now you add another 0.5X of brains. You have 0.95X of water and 0.1X of brains, together 1.05X of fluid.
0.1X brain in 1.05X of fluid makes concentration equal to 9.52%. Game probably rounds concentration down, or displays only integers.
I couldn't put another brain into bucket, but that might be because fluid was already at 10% which might be a max.

I'm very happy to know this insane mathematics, is there somewhere that we can collate these mad formulae?

sorry, but your math is not exact...
first brain: 1.00 water + 0.05 brain -> concentration: 0.05 / (1.00+0.05) = 4.76% ~ 5%
second brain: 1.00 water + (2* 0.05) brain -> concentration 0.1 / (1.00 + 0.1) = 9.09% ~ 9%

It is exact. It's based on assumption that after using 1 brain you get exactly 5% liquid. That's why I used X, cause I didn't want to calculate how much brain you need to get exactly 5%.
Now, whether with 1 brain it is 5% or 4.76%, and how the rounding is done, is only known to the devs.
