Servers are up, I can't connect

As the title suggests, I get the "Could not connect to server" message every time I try to log in even when I can clearly see that the servers are up via
http://login.salemthegame.com/portal/state.
BTW, I've never logged in before as I've just created this account, in case that info is useful.

It may be. You need to make sure of the following:
1. Java and Java apps are allowed to run and access the internet. Check any kind of security software you may be running.
2. You need to verify your firewall is allowing traffic through. Make sure ports TCP 1871 and UDP 1870 are open.
There may be other issues, but these are the two most common. It may also be that the servers are reporting that they're up but they've crashed and the status hasn't updated.

It probably was the servers, because today I'm playing without a problem.
