Atrocious frame-rates in "Boston"

I don't think this is a new issue, but I wasn't able to easily find a thread about this.

Whenever I port to Boston, I suffer from an atrociously bad frame-rate until I manage to walk away from the buildings, at which point things normalize again. "Atrociously bad" = ~0.5 FPS if I'm lucky.

In the wilds, I suffer no such problems, although after building a few drying frames at my encampment I would periodically experience similar drops in frame rate when returning from foraging.

My computer is a laptop with an Intel GMA 965 chipset for its graphics card. I know that there are some problems with this graphics card, but it hasn't caused any crashes, just atrociously bad frame-rates when in Boston, or possibly when around any large group of buildings.

Besides "buy a new computer", is there anything I can do to ameliorate the problem?

Thanks, I'll check those out.

My problem seems only to be with concentrations of buildings (clears up immediately when they are out of view), but I'll take anything that can help.

---------------

Using Chiprel's LowGFX mod resulted in an across-the-board framerate increase, enough to make visiting Boston tolerable (don't have to wait 2 seconds to see the response to each action). It's a little choppy in the town, but once the central buildings leave view, then it's really quite smooth.

As of the JOGL update, the game is now ONLY playable with the LowGFX mod, and I once again have problems in Boston (although only in some areas).

Without the reduced resolution textures, my Homestead is unplayably laggy. With the mod, I can play in my homestead and in the wilderness, but have problems when the post-office and a few other buildings are in view.
