Game Performance On My Laptop

Postby venom801 » Sun Jan 06, 2013 6:34 am

First of all, I know this is a beta, and I completely understanding that bugs are more important than game performance at this point. This is just my personal report on how the game plays on a slightly above average laptop. First off, the game and all its functions do seem to run fine. The only real complaint i have is that the fps is always tanking (at least i think so, i dont know how/if to pull up a fps counter for this game). I have turned off what graphics I can with no noticeable result. Now I would guess that they will be putting in more options to also help with this, such as view distance, but should my machine be lagging? Honestly its hard to know for me since it is an open world. The graphics don't seem like they would be that taxing, so my question is should i expect this to get better as they continue to update and optimize, or is it just the way its gonna be with the fps?

Let me know you opinions on this :P, and feel free to educate me.

You didn't mention which graphics processor and driver version or operating system you're running. There's also a lot more to it than just processor speed and amount of RAM. Also, there's a command for turning on frame rates in the "How to UI" thread in the Help! section if I recall right.

Part of the problem may be beta (not sure how much test code and scaffolding is in the client), but mostly it's Java and OpenGL. Java tends to be slower on many systems for a variety of reasons (not all having to do with the app's programmer; to note, tests have shown a good Java program to be almost as fast as native code). OpenGL can be at fault on consumer cards as games and programs that don't need professional level processing tend to use the common API, which, for Windows, is DirectX. That means OpenGL doesn't get the attention to improve performance (or even be completely bug free).

Overall, if you don't mind trying to tweak things, feel free to make some follow-up posts with what you did and how it changed performance. Others might find the information useful.

I think the biggest problem here is the integrated graphics card. Nothing with intel GPU can be called "slightly above average" when it comes to gaming :/

Any integrated graphics is usually going to be an issue as most use shared RAM with the system creating a bottleneck in the controller. There's a few out there that have their own sizable dedicated RAM, but not many, and you pay extra for it.

There's some very well written guides on squeezing performance out of any system out there on the Internet. It will guide you through things such as tweaking your drivers, Operating system, and even updating hardware. tweakguides.com used to be one of my favorite sites for digging up some of this stuff.
