This is very frustrating as if you hold down the W key to move forward, about 10 tiles in the boat just stops.

tween, just hit (er..tap) a or d every other second or whatever to prevent this.

Also, use ender's and then zoom out the map and CTRL+left click to get across large bodies of water.

I went rafting and had the same problem. It's quite annoying, and CTRL+left click on the map isn't very effective when you're navigating most streams.

I also noticed that you can activate movement modes while rowing. They don't seem to drain biles or affect speed, and I've no idea if it affects gathering efficiency. Prospecting works as well. Could be a bug, not game-breaking in the least though.
