NetX Error

On Arch Linux, via OpenJDK JVM, I receive the following error:

"You are using a buggy version of NetX. Please either downgrade or upgrade it and try again, or try another JNLP client."

This error occurs upon clicking "Play" on my character, however Java lets me log in just fine. I understand Linux was probably not your intended development platform, but things programmed in Java should work cross-platform, which leads me to believe this error can occur on Windows as well.

Java is the intended development platform. Some implementations of Java in Linux are buggy and Java Web Start isn't implemented correctly or possibly at all. You should check your various packages and do what's necessary. I know there was a Linux guru over on the Haven forums, but so far he (or she... never can be sure on the Internet) hasn't shown any interest in Salem.

I seem to recall one other person having an issue with Salem due to this. I don't recall a definite solution being posted.

how exactly is this attitude going to help you get paying users? :p

It's not, ecraven, but then players that can't install and run the software are never really going to be paying users in the first place.

The only possible thing I can think of at this point is to get ahold of the source and compile it yourself or mod it so that it doesn't need to use the Java launcher. This, however, will mandate that someone keeps the mod up to date every time there's a client update.

I had the same problem on openSUSE 12.2 x86_64 with openjdk-1.7.0.6.
The solution was to install Sun JRE from http://java.com .

I use Linux myself, so it's certainly an intended platform. ;)

It's precisely as it says, however: your version of NetX is buggy, and there isn't a whole lot I can do to work around the bug. The bug is probably the same one as that reported here, in which you can see me providing a patch that fixes the problem. Debian hasn't released a new version with the patch, however.

I had the same problem on ubuntu... I managed to run salem from a debian schroot at first.

After a while a tried to install the alter clients(ender's and latkiai) on ubuntu again...
I got stuck at updating in ender's but the latikai client worked.

Might be worth a try, The steps I took were:
1-Download latikai jnlp install(updater.jnlp) viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7681
2-Make sure there isn't any cached version of salem: javaws -Xclearcache
3-Run the updater: sudo javaws updater.jnlp

IMPORTANT: I could only use latikai client with sudo, without it I got an "undefinedClassDef" error.

Fokken worked!
