I toss my dead outside, and I happened to have an extra feeding trough outside near them. Today I noticed the trough is empty, so I suspect, the dead are still actively eating.

I don't know if there's some sort of connection with your problem , but on the last update Carver said that dead animals are not completly dead :
Fix'd a bug that was causing dead animals that have experienced a blood moon to breed long after they died. Dead animals will now only breed occasionally during blood moons, not long after.

And we had a blood moon not so long ago , maybe they ate at that moment ?

wonder if we could have animals behave mad when under the bloodmoon

Theese poor bastards are dead for 2 days. Before I put them there, this land was flat and paved.

The eating just occurred, I moved them out after the blood moon.
