Naked and Afraid

I was wandering on the Boston claim in the forest and the game froze.
I closed the window and tried to log in.
After about 3 or 4 times I finally logged in completely butt naked with no inventory in the same spot I left.
I've logged out and back in several times to see if it fixed the problem and no luck.

The server crashed and you don't have a homestead. After this last patch, if you have no homestead, your character will persist in the world if you try to log out; if your leanto is destroyed while you are logged out, everything drops on the ground. Since the server crashed and you were forcibly logged out, it behaved as if you were offline when your leanto was destroyed, which means all your things dropped on the ground and disappeared.

I think the important question is. What is the legitimate reason for not having a homestead in the first place?

John,

My legitimate reason is that i'm new and it was a play style choice.
My char is 3(maybe 4) days old and I did not feel confident enough to survive in the wild.
As a new player to the game I tend to take a conservative approach especially since this is a perma kill.

My concern is that a new player to the game might be anywhere from a couple minutes to a couple days old.
In the event of a server crash they end up naked with no inventory(i'm assuming here it's reproducible, not sure).
I'm pretty sure that's not intended behavior so I've posted in the bug forums.

* My biggest concern is the clothes thing. As a new player I can wander around collect more arrowheads and get silver again.
But a new set of clothes is simply out of reach to me unless you know someone. Fortunately I met someone yesterday through the
forums and i'm getting by.

There's a guy in Providence legitimately offering you an advice to read the latest announcements on the forums.

Though maybe a good idea would be a notification before logging out when you don't have a Homestead. Like
If your leanto or claimstone is destroyed while you are online, you will receive a notification.
Or when you log in and you may lose all your items. Why not.

Wow, this is helpful. I'm one of the first ones that will tell a person they need to stay up on the forums for all the changes to the game, but you're writing to a completely new player. How many brand new players will really be able to parse all that information and understand it? Even vets don't fully grasp patch notes in many games at the time of release without playing with the changed mechanics.

Though maybe a good idea would be a notification before logging out when you don't have a Homestead.

Better would be to notify a player, especially a new one, of this issue. Stick it in those tutorials that only come up once for an account. Most players, when ready to log out, don't want to be bothered with yet another chore to deal with. It will turn a player off of a game faster than your partner telling you they have a VD. Either tie a new player to the port claim for a period of 24 hours or make sure they know they need to use the wilderness guide to get a homestead in the wilderness immediately, or better yet, just toss them out to the wilderness and tell them that they can go to the port and homestead freely and wander around the port claim to learn the basics of the game if they don't feel safe.

I don't think 3 mouse clicks is a chore. There are enough wilderness guides for people to understand that they need to use their service.
Also a new player has nothing valuable to lose.
Also he's not completely new.
Also why does this guy call Providence Boston? How do new people know the main town was Boston?
Also, he may have lack of attention cause he didn't see the pop-up windows where it was written that there will be a restart.
