This; they are literally the most overpriced computers you'll ever find, even including Apple. Do yourself a favor and get a better computer for lesser moneys elsewhere.
What you don't think putting a fancy case on a dell is worth all that markup?
Oh, they're still better systems than a typical Dell (even the old XPS performance systems they made). They're not the computer they were before the Dell buyout, though.
A bit of education for our shopper. Alienware made their name because they were one of a couple of laptop manufacturers that could squeeze the performance of a mid to high end desktop into a laptop (even though that laptop was literally the heaviest and bulkiest one of the market). This was back when a 3D accelerator for a system was a good $300-$500*, and there wasn't a huge performance range choice, just brands and capability. My brother bought one when he enlisted in the navy, and it screamed compared to even a typical gaming desktop. It wasn't so severely overpriced, either, at the time. Now, everyone and their dog has a gaming laptop in their production line. *(There was always "last gen" cards, but if you wanted to play a game that came out this year, you had to drop the money, unlike today, you can get by on a 3-5 year old GPU and still play the latest game without worrying about it even booting.)
What you SHOULD be looking for in a modern laptop (unless you plan on replacing it every 12-24 months): durability of the display and its connections. Ask around at your local computer dealers to see which brands get returned the most and what they get returned for. Outside of hardware issues (bad drive, video, CPU/mobo/RAM), the most common issue is the display hardware and the connections. Dig up some consumer websites like Consumer Reports for reviews on durability. If you're going to drop over $1000 on a computer in this day and age, you should get the best parts. You're not going to get that with any Dell or subsidiary of Dell. (Macbooks hold up better than Alienwares I understand.) A relative who works in an Electronics department says they get the fewest complaints on Toshiba laptops. I'm not sure if they have "performance gaming" laptops available, but some do come with discrete GPUs (saw a few listed with nVidia GTX 770s).
