game freezing up often

Postby firefox2026 » Fri Aug 15, 2014 5:14 am

I have a freind who started playing with me and his client is just freezing up fairly often. I just curious if anyone had this sort of thing happen before and had things they tried that might help.. I almost want to suspect that maybe something with his internet is sluggish (since his internet is some sort of rural setup) and exposing a bug somehow.. He always seem to have trouble with Salem and even after he got a new computer I think as well.

Thanks,

Alot people do have this issue, in my knowledge there is no ''real'' fix yet.

He could try one of my modifications, in most situations it helps alot.

yeah I forgot to mention he is using Lat's client. I think it may be happening on the default client as well but I am not sure.

It does, altough I must say its somehow less.

If you're going to use a modification pack of mine Ill advice the 48x48 pack and I would love a feedback whether or not it helped.

Going to bump this back up on account of remembering that the new dev team might have different ideas on how to tackle this :D So I'm more or less in the same boat, game gets sluggish and freezes up for a second or two sometimes, quite frequently when it gets in the zone. It makes most everything a chore, and while being in absolute wilderness with few animal spawns and trees around does help a bit, being in town is just a turn off, navigating between pots to plant stuff is nowhere near as enjoyable as it would be were it not so choppy.

I'd like to reiterate the issue of sheds being nearby, as that seems to have been a reported issue before, and being in my shed-riddled town definetly sets off extra choppiness. To add to that, a friend that just replaced chest loaded carts with sheds has been having much more lag / choppiness than before.

So as both a specific (to this issue) and general question, do you guys have any plans to go over the code and try to optimize a bit more for lower end machines and/or internet connections?

I really hope so, because seeing as the game will turn more and more towards the PvP aspect, I'd really love to be able to enjoy it without the frustration of my framerate getting me killed :D I welcome tears of rage caused by my own incompetence, and dread similar tears caused by the game being unplayable in delicate situations.

Please watch your HDD light while it's happening. If it starts spinning off during these times, then it's likely that you're just swapping.

Hey :) Not quite sure how the HDD led should behave while "spinning off". It usually intermittently blinks now and then, with more frequent activity when I take screenshots or stuff like that, presumably since it has to save them to disk. I am going to try to do some thorough diagnostics of everything evar, and let you see it all and see what you can make of it. We have talked about this before and one of the main conclusions was that I am running a wood PC, which is more or less the case, so I'll give it that :D but I do however still hope that more optimizations can be made in time to allow for smoother gameplay to all, and that the shed thing gets looked into, if there's any merit there and if it can get fixed.

So I'll attach some stuff later on and then bump again when I've exhausted tests I can think to run. Feel free to let me know what I, or other people experiencing choppy gameplay can do to help diagnose the issue :)

Edit: Adding links to some profiling results done with VisualVM.
Memory profiling done with Latikai client

CPU profiling, also Latikai client

Older CPU profiling results from default client

Both of the profiling thingers ingame, Latikai client.

I guess I didn't catch the further discussion here. I wanted to mention I had to go to go back to my parents home last week. I didn't seem to freeze up like my freind was doing but I noticed something else that I would occasionally get stuck for a considerable amount of time times in the black loading screen. It was like I was there somewhat too cause I could move around and see my character move on the mini map but the darkness can taken over. lol I did check my internet connection and I would occasionally get lost packets like maybe 1-4% of the time. Now I also brought my parents a better router cause the one they had been acting funny with my cell phone. So I put the new one in and I wasn't getting dropped packets.. After that the black screen loading thing didn't happen after that that I can recall anyways. You would think the code would be able to handle a small amount of lost packets tbh. But I can't say i'm an expert in that area.. Odiously if packet loss was worse then would that cause the game to freeze and server kick them out?

Hopefully that shed some light on something..

Thanks

I meant how it behaves during those "one or two second" periods when the game freezes up.

@HDD led : It behaves no differently than usual, the occasional intermitent blink, not solid / near solid red nor entirely off either. I suppose I should've been clearer in specifying exactly what it is, if you look at the ingame profiler screenshot you'll see that it's just huge drops in framerate intermittently that to be fair feel like the game has frozen, since a lot of times it won't take any input unless I manage to sync the click/key press with the right part of the frame.
