I may have found a source of the problem on my PC:

Usually I have several Chrome browser windows running in the background when playing Salem. Now I tried closing all of them before starting Salem and I was able to play the character again. Login worked. Tried it several times to logout and login and it still works. Lets see what happens the next days.

So just give it a try and close all other programs/processes running in the background and only run the Salem client.

Please post here, if you could confirm my observation.

I tried the same thing, but it has no effect in my case. Tried to strip as many services as I could as well.

Devs, please do something about this.

My third character has become unaccessible as well, and I wasn't even next to a settlement. It just logged itself out, and became inaccessible.

This is an advanced character, so I can't just start a new one.

The character's name is 'Wand'

I seem to have fixed it.

I deleted the windows.conf file and the cache map in the users/Salem directory.

Well, I seem to have too many items in my own settlement to be able to login anymore. Travelling had become pretty much impossible, and now the temporary fixes don't work anymore, or are a rare random solution.

There's a new development, to my surprise.

This morning when I was not able to start Salem due to Java saying 'unable to launch the application', I had no idea what was going on at the time, so I eventually uninstalled Salem and Java 7, and reinstalled to Java 6 It still wouldn't start, so I installed Salem from the website, which worked. I started it up, and to my surprise I was not booted back to the login screen 2-3 times, like usual. The game loaded, and I was even able to travel to Boston and Back, and relog with another character, all without being booted to the login screen. I went ahead, and modified the updater.jlnp with new xml content a player had posted to make the Ender client work again, and when I started Salem, I was back to getting sent back to the login screen constantly. I tried once more through the standard client, and it worked again. I could even load old bugged chars.

I don't get it. I guess I'll play with the standard client for a while then.

Anywho, I know there are more folks out there with the 'crash to login screen' problem, so maybe there's some info here that can be salvaged to make a game a little playable again.

And I thought it was bad playing at internet cafe - but it seems if I have any of these issues, I can easily fix by switching computers.
I'd hate to have to mess around deleting cache/ reinstalling and changing routers(yes some have to).
