Game stops and i can't click

Postby Zodarok » Fri Nov 01, 2013 2:13 am

Hello guys,

When i am online with 2 clients open and i want to switch to the other client sometimes when i do so my mouse is gone, after a little moving with my mouse it is back but constantly with the loading cursor and i can't click anywhere in the game, and i can't close or minimize the game in the upperright. the game for the rest works fine because i see people walking and all movement in game still works on my screen. and other applications work aswell.
I have tried everything, reinstall the game, tried other client's, reinstall Java, other versions of java, updated videocard drivers..... nothing worked.
Nobody i knows has this problem so it's kinda weird.

Which client do you have?

Which operating system are you running?

How much RAM do you have? (bonus points if you know how to check if you have any RAM left while this is happening, sounds like the RAM might be full, getting paged, then getting retrieved from disk when you switch to it while something else gets paged to the disk... this happens when RAM is full. Stab in the dark at best tho.)

I have 16GB or RAM... 4 sticks at 2733MHZ... and it happens to me with 1-2 clients open at the same time.

Thing is I'm US based and the servers are in Sweden... all servers are based out of Sweden.

While I might get 50-90Mbps in the US... just about anywhere... in Sweden I'm limited to 4Mbps per client;.... and oft-times even that is limited.

It's just an issue of where you are vs where the server is...

When Jorb joins the 'new world' and bases at least one server US domestic... I doubt you'll ever have an issue.

I now found that the problem of the loading cursor comes when I go to my second screen with my cursor and then back to my main screen on the client.
The problem actually is that my cursor is completely gone after switching clients and having the problem, the only place where i can see my cursor is when i move it to the taskbar...
It isn't my ram that is full. i checked while playing and did some switching between clients and my ram was still on 3,5gb usage and i had the problem aswel.
Java isn't using more than 1gb per client too.
I really need help!
thanks

Please stop. Talking.
The bandwidth requirements to run salem (beyond loading the resource files to your cache) are VERY small. on the order of a handful of kilobytes per second. No way anyone in the "new world" would ever be noticeably slowed down by the bandwidth requirements.

That said, the issue does seem to be pretty specific to your system. I see no reason why RAM shortage would imply cursor issues: it would result in an overall slowing down of your system (which would be very noticeable), because windows will revert to hard drive paging.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd point fingers at your java version. Have you kept it up to date? The easiest way I can think of to check your java version would be to run javacpl.exe from your computer and press the "about" button, like so (incidentally, this is the latest version) :

Start from making sure both your java version and graphic card drivers are up to date (I doubt it is the latter, but it doesn't usually hurt to keep it up-to-date).

As a side note: up until recently I'd have recommend to keep nVidia drivers outdated because of crash issues. However, loftar's recent update of the server's copy of the JOGL libraries should have fixed that particular bug with nVidia v331 Game Ready drivers - nothing holds you back to update the drivers again!
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Since the patch...

1. I've gotten haven errors regularly which disappeared after the patch before last.

2. I'm getting spells of time... 20-40 minutes where my connectivity with the server drops to dial-up; but my speed is good, consistent with Stockholm...same as when I have no issues.

3. When my connection goes to crap... it effects not only the game but my ability to connect to the forums or game website. It's all or nothing.

I'm in the US; and I suspect I'm a long way from the host server, but the oscillation almost has a pattern... it's disturbing and ugly.

This is a good sign to check for connectivity problems. Run tracert to see if your getting a connection to the servers (<servername>.seatribe.se). (If you don't know how: open a command console--Start>Run>cmd.exe on Windows--and enter the command "tracert plymouth.seatribe.se". You'll get a list of addresses and times you can copy and paste to the forums here.) If things seem really out of whack such a large times or failed connections, you have an ISP problem. It could be a connection issue in the Internet or a DNS issue that your ISP might be able to help you with.

This can happen anywhere in the world. I don't know who your ISP is, but some of them are utter garbage and others strive for the best quality connections available. Neither size nor price make a difference on this, only the companies dedication to quality.

As an extra question, what kind of graphics card do you have ? I got a similar report from someone using an AMD card.
