i'm VERY sure this answer is floating on the forums several times already, but since it's so short i'll be lazy and give it again:

if you're using ender's client, search your computer for "salem.cfg" and edit the lines "shadows=true" to "shadows=false". Don't change anything else.

If you're using default client, download ender's.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Yes, the answer is floating around here somewhere. However, if you're on the default client, it's not so simple. In Windows, you have to go in and edit the registry and delete a key. I forget which one it is, though, or even where it's at. I'm not even going to try to give any instructions on this or finding it because screwing up the registry can make a computer inoperable.

The absolute easiest way to fix this is to uninstall Java, download a tool that will clean Java's leavings up (including any registry entries), and then reinstall.

You can also use the console command ":gl light vlight" during the login screen or character selection screen (before any 3D stuff is displayed, that is).

Is it safe to assume any console command can be used from any screen at this point other than the ones that communicate with the server (such as "log out") which need you logged in?

Yes; the problem, if anything, is that no error messages are displayed when there is no game UI, so you won't know if you typed something wrong.
