Client will not open

Postby SnowyKnight » Mon Apr 22, 2013 10:52 pm

A couple days back I went to get on Salem using the Ender client and it didn't open. The java thing came up and then nothing. I waited about a good five minutes and still nothing. So I thought I would re download it, but yet still nothing. So I thought it was the client its self. So I downloaded the original and same thing happened, nothing. I do not know if it is my computer or what, because it's never had this problem before. So I come to the forms in high hopes that some one could assist me.

Can I assume you've played prior to having issues? The only thing I can suggest right away is to check for updates that have gone through since the last time you played: Java (just saw an update the last few days or so), security software (firewalls, anti-virus, etc), and your operating system. Otherwise you'll need to be more detailed about "nothing." What exactly happens after you click the icon to launch Salem? Does anything show up at all? Does it show up an close? Do you get any error messages (if so, post them)?

I thought it would be my java but I went there and it says I have the latest version, maybe my adobe but nope got the latest version of that too. I have played yes, on and off since the early beginning. My game does crash a lot but I don't mind that simply reopen the game. But now when I click the icon the little java 7 thing comes up goes away then nothing. It doesn't open and I don't get an error so it leads me to believe that its my computer that is doing it. But why all of a sudden?

If you check your Task Manager, are you left with javaw.exe (or javaws.exe) processes running even after the download window has disappeared, or do they too disappear along with the window?

In that case, it could be that the JVM itself crashes for some reason. If that's the case, you should be left with files called "hs_err_*.log" somewhere in your filesystem, which would help tremendously in debugging it, but I can't say I know exactly where they'd go. The JVM puts them in its working directory, and I don't know exactly how Windows would initialize that. It could possibly be where you have the JNLP file or where javaws itself is located.

It doesn't appear to be with the javaws files and i don't know where my JNLP file is located

I suggest you download it manually and save it in some known location, then. ;)

I found a couple of old logs that I believe are related to Salem in my user directory in Windows.

Windows XP: C:\Documents & Settings\<user name>
Windows Vista, 7, 8*: C:\Users\<user name>\

* I believe 8 uses the same structure as 7

No worries, I uninstalled java and everything that had to do with Salem and re installed it. That seemed to completely fix the problem. Now back to Salem. Thanks guys. :D
