edit: several other people seem to be having this issue recently. I understand that there may be one of two issues at play here: there's a bug server side that is causing problems in certain cases (
Character can't enter world) or that there is a conflict with one of the protocols used for data transfer.
Seems like the problem occurs on laptops mostly, or lower grade video cards. I've tried a ton of things to better determine the problem.
What I have found to be able to continue playing, being the salem-junky that I am, is the following:
a) Whenever you're booted to the login screen, it's impossible to log back in, at least with the issue I'm adressing. Close the client, go to the users/Salem folder, and delete the window.conf file. You might have to repeat those steps a few times to be logged in again, and not be booted to the login screen continuously.
b) If that fails, remove the users/Salem folder, and the users/.salem folder. I find that something in those folders sometimes causes a conflict somewhere or gets corrupted. I have to add though, that removing these folders might not be effective, but only after starting the client for a second time and doing step a).
c) If all that fails, I have found that clocking back your energy profile is the solution, meaning the energy profile your laptop has, giving the options of energy saving, recommended, and high performance; or something in that sense. What I do is I put it on the lowest power profile, and put the processor on about 50%. For some reason, the above workarounds work this way. When I put it on a high power profile, they don't work. They used to, but don't anymore.
The conflicts have to do with certain objects in the game. So, most probably, when you run into a settlement, a conflict occurs, and you're logged out. By doing the a, b, and c steps, at some point, you can log back in. I have to do it every time I travel, except for Boston. When I travel to Boston, I am returned to the login screen, but can log back in after 1 minute. When I travel to my homestead, I have to close my client, and juggle with the above steps to be able to log back in.
Personally, I have an ati hd 3200 in my laptop.
