Publisher Verification

Postby Deese » Wed Feb 13, 2013 3:45 pm

My security software is stating that the publisher can not be verified for the game download, and as the game opens full access to all information on my PC it should not allow it to be installed.

How long does it take to fix this problem?

The Salem site is 'green' meaning safe to use, according to McAfee. While I wait for your answer I will check with McAfee as to why there should be a problem on their 'green' site.

please note there is a hell of a lot of difference between what certain so-called virus scanners deem safe, and a signed java applet.

In the case of signed java applets, the game developer would have to buy an RSA certificate from official distributors, which isn't all that cheap, to prove that they indeed did create the program you're downloading.

What McAfee calls safe sites is simply a heuristic for sites they didn't receive any rants about, yet.

Generally, neither (and one less than the other, take your pick) guarantee a Completely Safe Experience™.
But this game is, like, totally cool man. No spam or trolling or whatever.

I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

The game is being published by Paradox Interactive of Sweden. They have global offices in a variety of countries. While it's no guarantee of trust, it's a start. If you're looking for the green light from your security software, you may be a long time coming, and you shouldn't completely trust that, anyway. There are ways of hijacking these security measures (may be very involved methods, but still doable). If you want to know more, there's some really great books on computer security out there, but don't start reading them unless you have an iron will.
