Edge of Darkness

Postby liren » Wed Jan 30, 2013 10:51 pm

Hi guys,

I walked west from my starter location on Jamestown (alt name: Mina) and found myself at the edge of the darkness. It was a dimly lit area and my humours were all normal (they average around 8 since she's fairly new). Since I don't know how to find coords on the map, I don't know exactly where it was but I can tell you it was grassland and the spot I created my new lean-to is in between a game trail that leads west into the darkness and lime deposits. I wandered all over the area exploring and leveling skills. I walked north, then west around a lake. Once I got far enough west, I noticed my humours were decreasing (I never saw the you should go back notice I saw once when I wandered into the darkness with my main on Plymouth). I quickly dropped everything and ported back home. All was well. On my next hike, I traveled north again and then east around the lake until I got pretty much all the way around it and got to the darkness again. I ported back and was fine, chopped up some logs, then logged out -- note: my black bile was low since I consumed remaining inspirationals to empty my pack, and my phlegm was low due to the wood chopping. The next morning, I logged back in -- and my humours start draining quickly and I got knocked out. Twice. Remember, I'm back at my lean-to where all was well. When I came to, I decided to quickly port to Jamestown, eat food to regen humours, went back home, and grabbed my dropped logs. Humours started draining again. I ported back to Jamestown, ate some more, went back to retrieve my stash from the lean-to and then all was well again. I decided to move on. But I have to ask, is this the intended behavior? Doesn't seem right.

Yes, I expect the drain in the actual darkness but not on the edge.

At the edge of darkness, there isn't any drain, but it makes it so that if you let your humours drop to rock bottom (ie: using all of your phlegm, or studying for too long) you will get knocked out, and chain knocked out just like regular darkness.

You can avoid both of those situations by eating frequently and not letting your humors drop below the drain threshold.

To explain a bit better:

Once you enter the darkness, anywhere, there's a threshold at which you will start to notice the drain. Above this, and you won't drain at all. Below it, and you'll drain at the current rate (don't recall if it's constant across all of darkness, based on total/current humors, or current darkness level). At the absolutely lowest levels, it's a threshold of 1 or lower. This is why you can be camped "on the edge" and still get the repeated KOs from darkness drains. There's a math formula for it, but I'm not aware of it being given out and nobody figuring it out yet.

The fix to keep the KO spam from happening is pretty obvious, assuming the devs want to fix it. Simply check, when waking up, if the player will be in a darkness level with a drain threshold higher than the current lowest humor. If so, Port to Boston instead of Port to Homestead. Maybe give a warning that the player was ported to Boston because of darkness threshold. (or not and troll the players)
