Graphics chip sets that aren't working

Postby MagicManICT » Fri Aug 03, 2012 5:38 pm

I'm reposting (with a few edits) my thread from the Paradox forums on the "not so working" graphics chip sets. If there's specific instruction on how to fix a particular GPU, I'll follow this post up with a link back to the original post at Paradox and quote the post in entirety (would like to have the person that did the work get the credit). Another note: I think it's safe to assume that anything made in the last 8 years is going to work as long as there is a proper driver for it and settings are configured properly.

For those that haven't found a working solution, it would be great if you could post a paper trail of what you have researched so that others can at least know what you have and haven't tried. If I find it in another post as "not working" I'll list it here.

The biggest culprits so far have been Intel chipsets, most of which are older and no longer supported.

As one final note: Salem uses the OpenGL 1.4 spec, which was released in 2002. Hopefully that will help some people dig up drivers for their cards.

ATI cards:

All ATI users will need to make sure to turn off the OpenGL setting "Triple Buffering". It's not supported and will cause the client to crash after character select.

Radeon HD 6370 Mobility--crashes on enabled shadows

nVidia cards:

No known issues at this time. (The same triple buffering issue might be applicable; I'm not as familiar with the nVidia drivers and utilities.)

Intel cards:

What's happening is that the Intel software thinks it is up to date, when it is not. If you manually download the right drivers in exe form it will not work as an error will pop-up. So instead you need to download the generic zip file, and manually update it.

In my case I had to get the "win7_64-152612" file which can be accessed here. Select the 'Graphics>Processor Graphics>2nd Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® HD Graphics 3000/2000>Windows 7(64bit*)." Proceed to clicking on the second option, then download the file hitting the accept option.

Once that is done, extract the file, then go to the Start Menu>Control Panel>Device Manager>Display Adapter>Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000>Right-click>Update Driver Software>Browse My Computer for Driver Software>Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer>(Select the 'HD Graphics Family'?)> click on 'Have Disk'>Browse> Find the location of the extracted files>open the Graphics subfolder>click on 'igdlh64.inf'>Open>OK>click on 'HD Graphics 3000'>Next. Wait for it to install. Restart, and you should be good to go!

I hope this helps.

EDIT: This will not work with Optimus. However, in my case that is okay as my 540M crashes the computer everytime. You probably should check on your OEM Manufacturers driver updates for your specific system. Hopefully they will have an update available at some point.

One more post from the other thread, this is my working solution for the 945GM:

SALEM WILL NOT RUN ON THE MOBILE INTEL 945 EXPRESS CHIPSET (GMA950) WITH WINDOWS XP.

I installed Windows 7 to my netbook. Since this kind of computer does not come equipped with an optical drive, I had to use a USB flash drive to create a disc image of my Windows7 DVD. Instructions can be found here:

http://arstechnica.com/business/2009...b-flash-drive/

After installing Windows 7 and the latest drivers (ver 8.14.10.1930) I was finally able to play Salem on the netbook without any openGL error 1280/1281 crashes.

I should add that OpenGL's error code 1281 is an extremely generic error ("invalid value") that could mean almost anything, so you shouldn't necessarily conclude that you're having the same problem as someone else just because you're both experiencing an "error 1281".

Dear loftar,

Whenever I click the toggle shadows button, my graphics card fries and all my breakers explode. Please fix this. Thanks!

Thanks for the followup on that, staxjax. It was mentioned in the thread (or maybe the site that developed the drivers), and the fact that they are x64 pretty much means Vista or 7. Though there are still a few WinXP x64 installs out there, I'm not sure that drivers are compatible between the two. (There's certainly no DX10+ available for any XP install.)

The posts on paradox about this are exactly what I'm having. I just don't know how to fix them. This is my computer, what do I download/do?

Are there any other Intel 950 (945) GMA chipsets that should support salem than these? None of the Sherry chips work for me: The driver being installed is not validated for this computer.

Sir, If you are running windows XP then those drivers will not work. The ONLY way I was able to get Salem to work on the 945gm chipset was to install Windows 7 and believe me when I say I tried everything.
