(Ge)Ode De' Resin

Postby jwhitehorn » Mon Jul 08, 2013 8:00 pm

I've been dreaming about developments. And here is what I thought...

*Each Mine Tile has a % Chance to drop a Geode. This chance is directly related to your M&M capping at 1%. (very rare)
*NEW SKILL "Expert Miner" allows for Geode extraction , (7,500 M&M, 4,500 Sparks & Embers, 2,500 Arts & Crafts)
*A Geode tile in a mine is extracted at Tree-chopping speed (2% ticks) yet still drains the mining phlegm. Can ONLY be removed with a pickaxe. (Bring food)
*A Geode has 0% Purity but can be pressure cooked with any other item to obtain the purity of what it is cooked with.
*When placed in a Test Tube the Geode will GUARANTEE the other (2) items in the tube obtain jumps in the direction of its alchemical properties. Doing so expends the Geode.
*England has recently heard of the Geode rush of the America's and has sent large shipments to the stalls at 3,500 silver ea.
*Geodes are available on the store for $15.00 ea.

GEODE REFERENCE wrote:Geodes are common in some formations in the United States (mainly in Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, and Utah). They also are common in Brazil, Namibia, and Mexico. A large geode was discovered in Put-in-Bay, Ohio in the early 20th century. It is known as Crystal Cave, and tours are possible during the summer. In 1967 Iowa designated the geode as the official state rock, and it has a Geode State Park.
In 2000 a team of geologists found a cave filled with giant gypsum crystals in an abandoned silver mine near Almería, Spain. The cavity, which measures 1.8 × 1.7 meters and is 8 meters in length, would be the largest geode ever found.[1]

*NEW SKILL Tree Tapping (7,500 Frontier & Wilderness, 4,500 Natural Philsophy, 2,500 Stocks & Cults)
*A tree now has "Tap Tree" on the Radial menu. Doing so displays a Resin/Sap Texture on the Tree which can be harvested (48) hours later.
*Trees can be tapped again within 10-20 days. Saplings now regenerate between 7-14 days.
*Harvesting Resins has a chance to return a *gasp* "Resin", or release a neurotoxin. Chance of releasing toxins is based on Frontier & Wilderness. 7500 F&W = 99% chance. 25,000 F&W = 95% chance. (you are going to fail A LOT)
*Neurotoxins half the prof. values gained from studying items (Think English Snuff but backwards). Each Neurotoxin stacks for (12) hours and is cumulative. Stacks persist through death.
*Neurotoxins can be cured via new potion derived from Boiled Lobster Mushrooms, a Frog, and wood chips from a moldy board. Each potion cures only one stack.
*Boats & Canoes now both take a Resin in their build menu.
*England is attempting to capitalize on Resins as well and now offers them for 750s ea.

RESIN REFERENCE wrote:Resins
These most commonly found types of plant exudates are chemically completely different to gums. Resins are terpene-based compounds. Terpenes constitute one of the largest groups of plant chemicals, and they can be very complex. They are not water soluble, but can be either oil soluble or spirit soluble, depending on their specific chemical composition.
Most resins and latexes are obtained from the tree trunk by making incisions, and 'bleeding' the tree - a process that is known as 'tapping'. While it is possible to harvest resins sustainably, it must be remembered that deliberately injury puts a considerable strain on any tree and there must be strict limits to the number of incisions and period of productivity. Recent research has shown that the carbohydrates present in the exudates are important energy reservoirs for the trees concerned and that excessive tapping reduces the numbers of flowers and the size and viability of the seeds. Such guidelines are particularly important to observe where the gum is collected from wild populations where regeneration is left to nature.
Resins used to be much more commonly utilized in industry, e.g. in the production of oil paints and varnishes or to waterproof ships. These days their industrial uses have largely been diminished in favour or synthetic substitutes. Some resins have powerful medicinal properties that have long been utilized in herbal medicine, but others can be toxic. For example resins derived from certain plants of the Artemisia family or from the Cypress contain thujone, which is a known neurotoxin.

*NEW SKILL Equipment Mending (Tailoring 7,500, Hammer & Nail 5,250, Arts & Crafts 6,400)
*While using a loom you may perform the skill "Mend Item".
*Mending an Item requires a Resin and an item with a broken slot. Success of mending is based on your TAILORING skill. 7,500 Tailoring = 85% success. 25,000 Tailoring = 95% success.
*If you fail to mend an item the entire item and resin are now destroyed and gone forever.
*While using a loom you may now perform the skill "Unslot"
*Unslotting an item will NOT return the item it was originally socketed with but WILL free up the slot to replace the item. Unslotting has a 50% chance to fully destroy the item.

In the nature of our Great Spirit you can see that these professions are a bit brutal but also rewarding. Resins and Geodes would be rare and difficult to obtain. Resin harvesting requires some premeditated decisions about your play times and when you next plan to study. Added some uses to items that are needing some love. Gave an "end-game" opportunity to both PURITY and Equipment. Both can now be "perfected" with a challenging yet obtainable level of effort.

Thoughts?

Stall price seems way high. You get 1000 silver for $25, that's $87.5 for 3,500 using that price. 5000 silver is $100, that's $70 for 3,500 using that price. I'd say lower the stall price to 300, lower the geode store price to $10

Seems way high. I'd be fine with a 10% chance of releasing toxin at 7500 F&W, 50% chance to get a resin, and requiring an iron or copper tool that is put on during the 48 hour window.

Why persist through death? I doubt anyone is going to kill a 7,500 F&W, 4,500 NP and 2,500 S&C character when they could easily get a bunch of potions.

The Geode was intentionally left cheaper than just "buying the silver then buying the Geode". If it matched the silver price then why buy that instead of silver?

Resins were meant to be a super rare thing. Although you bring a good point that what is the fun to just run around and get neurotoxin'd. So perhaps Resin should have some additional purpose with a "rare' version of it being capable of repairing armor. Perhaps you NEED a Resin to socket anything into armor and you need the "Super" version of the Resin to do the "repair".

Persist through KO not persist through death.

I would leave the canoes as they are as they are all ready sealed with lard. They would become useless when compared to boat with the skill requirements you quoted or the amount of money involved to buy a resin to make them most people would chose to make the more usefull boat. It would also leave no means of faster travel for a less established players like myself for the purposes of exploring, collecting resources or hunting (esp beaver).

Oh, you meant selling. I thought you meant the player gets silver for a geode. Yeah, that seems fine.
