If you were a refugee then you'd be given housing and monetary help. It'd last as long as you were termed a refugee. But you'd be given a green card and help in integrating here (language classes, education). It's not that different there than here.

If you were a straight up immigrant you'd be given a green card and then be part of whichever state's workforce laws for unemployment and welfare. There would still be government language classes available and other education, but not as much. If you were unemployed your green card status would be reviewed but it would depend on your immigration status if you were deported or not. If you were in the process of getting citizenship then you'd be fine and be able to get any social welfare. If you were only on a green card then you'd get some but much less help until your green card ran out.

The American Immigration system is much more advanced and complicated than any European countries. I've worked with refugees here back when and had other contact with some immigration rights groups. We have literally thousands of visa types here, everything from tourist visas to medical visas to refugee status to 100's of varying green cards (work visa's) depending on job type, immigrant status and time allowed in the country. We are a land of immigrants. There are almost 40 million immigrants living in this country (13%) and another 40 million second generation that makes every 4th person here with a direct connection to immigration, and it makes us one of the most diverse countries in the world.

I don't know which is more pathetic, you thinking that was serious, or whoever falls for you trying to make that seem serious.

Serious or not he still said it. It's not a very good joke if he wasn't being serious.

You are just imagining that. Really you're just not very good at your job, and nobody likes you there because you're so bitter, and the people promoted over you are just better than you at the job.

To clarify, better at the job of getting promotions, not necessarily at doing the assigned tasks. There can be a very distinct difference there. I think that maybe there really isn't much sarcasm in that statement given the previous post.

An ability to do something is not equal to a right. If we truly had "free speech", one could say these things in life with no consequences. We don't have that level of freedom for a reason. Sure, you can stand up and say almost anything at an organized convention, rally, etc. and find supporters (heck, the Klan is still around in parts of the US), and you might even find a niche to live and work in and be able to hold on to bigoted beliefs. However, get relocated out of place, and you'll quickly have those rights "infringed" upon because of your past actions. Good luck finding work and success for your kids in school. Talk this way outside of those rallies and conventions, and you'll quickly just get labelled as one of the "crazies." Society wants to work with like-minded people, people that fit in with the herd, and not those that move against the grain. Of course, that could lead off into an in depth discussion on society, cultures, etc.

It's a horrible joke if he's being serious. In fact, it's the complete opposite of a joke. On the other hand, you can make wild statements and be completely serious and have them be great jokes. It's a fine line to walk sometimes and only a few subjects and a few comedians can really pull it off.

+1 for clarity

the only thing I would add is that Society doesn't just like people that work within the herd. Society also likes people with conviction that stretch the law and societal rules for stated action of the betterment of mankind, society, or human rights. I'd give as example Gandi, Mandela, MLK, and even Snowden (on the libertarian side)

I agree that immigration there is much more advanced than here.
Here it needs a lot of tweaking still.. Immigration now grants one lots of exploitable privileges.
I love / hate Finland. Sometimes me and my wife talk about moving somewhere else, and become immigrants ourselves, lol ;)
I'm lucky I have a job, it's not too common in my town / nearby cities.
Maybe I follow the footsteps of my grandpa and move to Australia :D

Does anyone have any idea how well metal workers do in US?
For example CAD/CAM programmers or welders?

Pretty well. It's construction so it's seasonal but I've seen numbers between $50,000-70,000 USD thrown around for certified welders before. Obviously it depends on where you live and how expansive the construction market is at the moment.

What a difference!
Maybe only surgeons make more money than that in Finland :D
Metal workers on average about 20,000 - 25,000 €

In other words, I see that hard work is appreciated in there.
In here, metal workers are only respected by metal workers.
