I think you might be used to it. I've seen worse, but I think that Haven's forum is a little more dog-eat-dog than what Salem should shoot for. Then again, it's a different culture in Salem, a different community, and even with these more laxed rules, it could be OK. But until Salem/SeaTribe appoints a Community Manager who answers to Jorbtar and operates on their terms while being able to provide input from a perspective of marketability over trolling enjoyment (when necessary), I think that if we get another population boom, the game could be hurt in the long run.

Think of it as the old adage, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." The forums are a focal point of the game. The game needs a consistent population and the ability to attract new gamers to sustain its cash shop as well as its overall playability. If the forums are too harsh to attract/keep players, Salem won't reach the great heights to which we all believe it to be destined.

Even great content and the if-you-can't-take-the-heat-get-out-of-the-kitchen attitude won't cut it if there's no functional system in place to convince new players, the gaming community at large, reviewers, etc that we aren't a bunch of noob slaughtering trash talkers.

I think it varies. Both forums can be harsh at times but fundamentally the people involved are generally good folk that just want to play a game to their hearts content.

When I first came over here I thought the Haven forums were harsh, but, omg, they are sweetness and light compared to this one! I stopped coming to this forum to post long before I actually quit the game, which brings me to my second point - if people like Salem, the forum is not going to stop them from playing, or reading the forum - just from posting. :)

That is most certainly the case if you already have your own personal circle of friends there. Having mostly lurked there I'd say the language and tone is much harsher. Lots of cursing and personal attacks and even the devs and mods join in. Someone like Painhertz, for instance, didn't last very long on the Salem forums. In HnH his hostility is given free reign because the community like their resident troll.

If a harsher tone is what you appreciate in your forum culture I can respect that. Just don't get any illusions about where people are more hostile. Yeah, you might think it's "funnier" to have a more laidback style but people dropping F-bombs and telling you to go die in an alley is objectively more hostile behaviour that would have led to a warning or a ban on most forums. That you are "in" on it doesn't mean everyone is.
