You should have offered to give him the shovel on the boston claim. He might have felt safer there. Maybe he thought if he wasn't on his claim and you killed him it wouldn't leave scents or something.

I came across the very same base mentioned in the OP, while searching for a lost friend of mine. Urns still full of free goods, nice to see some generosity in this game.
