The worms are probably depressed like us, because of the new system, refusing to eat. Dark times..

Not really. I prefer to keep the patch notes brief precisely because, again, I cannot anticipate and in advance correct every conceivable misinterpretation that might arise.

I think next patch should quadruple all storage container capacities to accommodate the 4 varieties of everything we need to store now (salt/merc/sulfur/lead) in addition to the worm feeding

I wish.
Though this would be the perfect time to introduce an upgraded backpack or some form of increased carrying capacity.

You wanted to say all the pairs of elements (salt/merc, salt/sulph, salt/lead, merc/salt, merc/sulph and so on)?
