You can say I sold out. I may have. The fact of the matter is, the bases usefulness to me was greatly diminished when the island blew up on the forums. I could have held on, while gaining an enemy of a faction I respect. This situation was brought on from hastiness by all involved, too much forums/irc posting, and misguided priorities. I cant say I am without some sadness about losing the spot, but limelight is not my style. I will move on to bigger and better things that wont be discussed here. I hope CQ makes good use of it, and Trennial, I hope you find your place in this harsh frontier. You are a nice guy, with great spirit, you just need to spend less time online seeking the approval of your peers. You need prove nothing to them, just have fun! The one thing about Salem I dislike the most, is its systems make trust very hard to come by. Good people are hard to meet, and relationships are hard to grow. I am glad to have met SB, I glad to have met CQ. I love Salem, and ill see you all out there.

The Unicorn Video is actually pretty close to what happened.

to the mods: The Island portion of this thread actually pertains to the original title due to the same raider's being involved. So this is not a derail.

to Tweenie: As the island is now filmed and gone, I feel that it's okay to talk about. ;)

to Sitting Bull: I'm sorry to hear of your character loss, I hope you stick with the game and keep fighting the good fight. Long live Crazy Horse. :)

to the Candy Queen and the Candy Gang: Congratulations on the new base. Out of respect to you, I'll humbly offer you the same deal I gave Sitting Bull and Tweenie. I won't post the location of the island or a map of the island and it's area as long as you don't raid my bases anywhere in the area. I am not a raider and have no quarrel with you. Please maintain stability in the region, there are many good players in the area who simply want to trade, mine and farm. If you treat us nice we will help you with your rangering and give you deals on trades. PM me if you're not sure if it's my base or not. PM me as to the political makeup of your neighbors, I have met almost all of them. There are a few bad apples which I will be glad to point out.

As the person who originally found and lived on "The Rock of Roanoke" or as it was originally called "The Deep Little Island" I believe I now have all the information, so here's it's story.

A lonely mapper named Claeyt slowly rowed back and forth across the massive lake to get every last tile mapped, suddenly a beautiful little island surfaced. The island was flat and green with about 100 hexes x 80 hexes but at a weird angle. I realized that the island would make an incredible little farm or hideout as it was completely unswimmable, and unless you had a map very, very hard to find again. there was no mine (at least with a 22% rod) or resources but it was a nice little island to build on. So I put up a lean to and slowly began mapping again, occasionally dropping off scavenged items and rocks to eventually build a small base. Here's a picture of me chopping down the first tree on the island which has now switched hands 4 times.

A few weeks later the Waste Claim update came out and I and some people I knew realized that the island was maybe farther than 1000 hexes away from any land and that a town bell would make a fort on the island impregnable from waste claims. After checking we found that it was true. Except for a few little scraps of land easily covered by claim stones, the island was secure from the waste claim mechanics.

At this point, the story of the island became a story of maybe the absolute most secure location on any server, period. As a farmer/miner/mapper I decided to trade it. I traded the island to a minor ranger/raider named Silas Stumpwater for a location of his. I kept in contact and watched as he began his fort. While chasing down several leads on other raiders in the area I met Sitting Bull in town. Sitting Bull was pretty well known and eventually he and Silas Stumpwater hooked up to fight the CoD and their allies. They leveled the island and started a base. They had no braziers as they believed the waste claim immunity would protect them. They then began raiding those groups. I warned Tweenie that Sitting Bull's war (no matter how justified) would attract to much attention, and I followed their exploits from the sidelines.

Finally, they hit Kyle's place. Kyle was supposedly a known trader with the Russians and was on Sitting Bull's list. They left scents, and retreated to "The Rock". The Candy Queen followed up on the raid, and scavenged some other of Kyle's things and some scents of Sitting Bull and Silas. Realizing that it was Sitting Bull, no friend of the Russians, She left the scents alone. Sitting Bull's bragging about the island is what got him killed. The Candy Queen and gang had been in the area and I'm betting had a map of the island. The island had a town bell so that it could not be waste claimed. The Candy Kids were able to do what they did because they had a spy join the town bell, and get it's party secret. Sitting Bull may have been the one to give it out while trying to recruit new allies, but that's not for certain. The Candy Gang waited until they were both offline, then simply rowed out to the island, joined the town, broke the gate, summoned Sitting Bull and Silas so as to kill the town bell mayor and leveled the little base. Unfortunately for the Candy Gang, Silas had the mayorship on an alt. At this point secret negotiations began with Tweenie trading the island town bell for a pile of stuff that I won't mention here.

The island is now in the hands of the Candy Gang. If you're looking for names to call it, I'd suggest "Big Rock Candy Island". :D The island still has never been waste claimed or completely leveled, and I still believe it to be immune to waste claim mechanics. Only the Dev's could level it now, unless they change the mechanics somehow, perhaps by adding money to extend waste claims in certain directions. I don't know. We'll see.

The Morale of the story is Tweenie should have picked a sneakier side and given less lee way to Sitting Bull, and Sitting Bull shouldn't have bragged about the island, and has a habit of trusting the wrong people. Hopefully the Candy Gang uses the island for good and not evil, I'd rather have them own it then the CoD. As to who the spy was, I've only heard rumors that Realak wanted to join the island at some point (possibly making him the sneakiest bastard on 2 servers) and Sitting Bull is the only one who, I think knows for sure. We'll see what the future holds.

Claeyt, you were the first wrong person I trusted. This tale is only half true, alas, I dont care to elaborate.

Yes we once had a major disagreement. I've never done anything to hurt you or your places.

Unfortunately your loss of the island has now made the area much more dangerous for the rest of us out there. I forgive you. :)

So it was the candy gang, after all? I'm slightly amused.

That said, I'm very tempted on having that location salted. You might want to move out.
