Lets say you settle 15 min away from Boston (you wont be able to make a single wall before your spotted) but lets say you manage to make 2 walls and a ton of braziers all filled up with coal. Its just a matter of time when will an organized group of players start the siege. Since we are talking about a hermit theres no way youll win. Sooner or later braziers will run out of fuel and walls will get destroyed. So the latter your place gets detected the better, you will have more time to grow and to prepair defences.
Not necessarily. Since the world map is updated, it is fairly easy to look for "dead spaces" that people will naturally migrate to. These areas probably have the type of settlements you are talking about. Any raider could easily stroll through these areas looking for exactly the type of people you spoke of, new people with poor defences. And they could attack them immediately, since the areas are not hidden.
