I've been thinking about how a google map of he server would be best utilised and how alot of people hate sharing their maps for fear that they'll be hunted down and robbed, killed and so on.
Looking at the code for Google maps, it's mostly javascript so be fairly easy to modify.
I personally use BD Salem for my map making and enders only for flattening land.
The Map Tool for combining them into one big map.
Here are some thoughts;
Modified server code to have zoom, grid overlay, Goto "point" (Boston, home, village, etc.), map pins like custom google maps when you login to google.
Accounts for members on the server to enable private and public maps. Private being hiding your homestead location from the general public but allowing view up other updating map chunks.
Buddy locator pins, allow for your buddy list to be used within your friend list and show where they are, although not a realtime thing but rather where there house is.
Custom pins for showing a nice location for a village, where to hunt deer, beavers, or other ingame items.
Resource datamining, something like a Curse client that shows an overlay in various colours (customisable like BD's minimap) to show where rabbits are spotted when you discover them. Over time this shall update the resource map overlay with red and fading away where they're not seen.
Another layer showing where darkness starts with a transparency layer fading out to a dark overlay over the Darkness area. The map can still be updated seperate to this and allow for people to find where it is, how deep it goes etc.
One of my altime favourite games, The Settlers, had a unique feature for tracks, roads, and how much traffic was using a certain path from A to B. It would be open grass, then slowly over time you would see a dirt trail appear, and eventually it would become stone roads. This is something I'd really like to see ingame more than just a map feature. Just not sure such a thing would be beneficial to a map? Having a traffic overlay could help find where people have been and which areas are most used.
Screenshots, like those of Street View to be attached to a gallery of some amazing piece of landscape or weird tourist attraction

How about a journey planner where you can have a clear path through the mountainous region showing how to get to a specific location? I forever seem to teleport to the middle of 5+ high terrain, although haven't had a chance to do that so far, out with my cartographers pen and paper

Something atkin to showing the terrain hieght(s).
PDF tour guide output maybe.
And depending if there is enough interest, maybe instead of just grabbing the map as if a Satellite overhead, actually making a proper map that could be printable in B&W or just easy to read for visually impaired.
Having a terrain legend with distance measure and terrain features like a real map.
All the above is possible and you could even have (from accounts) auto uploading and checking of newer map chunks, and when necessary hiding a tile for your homestead without much fiddling around from the user as this would all be done with script and server side fuctions.
I do have a shared host which is currently sitting at: HDD 500GB, traffic c.2TB month, can make domains and subdomains, SQL databases and so much more that I don't even need all this :p I have this for life, and as long as I pay for it every 2 yrs, it just keeps getting bigger and more features.
Anyway, the point is I'd like to see the wiki, map, forum, and all that come together to help Salem succeed as if deserves. I just need to know if enough interest is worth pursueing this venture?
