When you get knocked out, lying on the ground with stars over your head, you end up back at home or major city and lose your inventory. You also lose 2 random points from your profs. If you are in battle with an animal or person and you log out, you will not log out of the game. Your character stays in game and can be knocked out by an animal or player (or even killed by another player). I think this is also the same if you have any crime debuffs.

PvE: Hit/Miss Punch

I started playing a week ago and only have the 1st tier combat skill bought, so the only attack I have is punch... let's stop there for a second. Before I bought this skill, snakes wouldn't be bothered by my presence, but since I bought it they are kicking my ass at every oppertunity, what's up with that?

In this week's time, the thing that is taking me by far the longest to master is PvE... and I'm nowhere near mastering the basics. It seems neigh impossible to hit anything, i.e. to actually land a successful punch. After a considerable amount of searching I found a comment somewherethat you need to face the enemy when punching in order to land a successful hit. My srategy to that point had been to get my balance debuff gone and then on the enemy's next approach, I would left click his pic top-right and punch. So, facing the enemy should have worked just dandy. However, with the new info I could investigate.

After trying this a couple more times I see that something is thoroughly screwed with this movement mechanic. After I left click the enemy's pic and my toon takes the step into contact, the moment I hit punch my toon changes direction to 12 o'clock. So, the only way I can land a punch is to make the enemy chase me while I run to 6 o'clock and then turn and punch to 12 o'clock.

Am I missing something here?

Attacks go in the direction of your cursor.

Personally, I tend to leave some distance and then turn around and punch like you do. Against deer, I just keep clicking into them until they stop moving, then throw my swing (so they can't/won't charge). I don't know about the default client, but using Ender's, I have Thrust hotkeyed and it just makes me stab in the direction I'm facing when I press it, no second click necessary for "aiming".

If you have your attacks hotkeyed, then the attack is in the direction of the cursor just like in Diablo or similar games.

Maybe on to something? I've not wandered around long enough without self defense to really see. Of course, this is the first report like this I recall, so either it is wrong or it could be new behavior to make the very early game a bit safer for newbies (lowered/no aggro range for snakes).

It might be that it just so happened that I never got attacked by the sperm-snakes before I had self defence and then as soon as I got it I drew unlucky. I'll check it out.

Similar thing happened with bears though, I didn't get attacked by the 1st 4 bears I saw. And I definitely got close enough since the 1st time I went closer to try and figure out what it was, right up to it... I'm assuming it's a bear btw? Guessing from HnH, since bears there look more like weird beavers than bears. By the time I saw the second 2 I already had self defence and thought that they don't aggro so I walked around them without a care... and they didn't attack. The 5th one raped my ass though.
