I guess there is a huge randomness or I'm just too unlucky...
I read everything ppl wrote and used it as reference where to build my pile. So I made it in middle of empty area, closest tree is 12 tiles away diagonally. it took 5days 20hours to dry (didn't know it can take that much over 5days, so those 20hours were longest 20hours in game XD). I got 11/40 dry boards. from those 11 dry I got only 2 planed ones... I guess with this luck I would get 0 oiled ones :(
I cleaned one pile from neighbour who stopped playing. he placed it next to a tree, 4tiles away is river. in like 10x10 area with pile in center are 2 drying frames, house, and lots of containers. it's grassy area that is not flattened. and guess what? all 40 boards were dry :x
so maybe passing many times near pile really make moldy ones (since he doesn't play no one passed there)...
I'll make new pile on same spot to see what will happen XD

What distance should be between timber piles construction signs to prevent mold spread?

Most people mention 5 tiles in all directions, however, I myself would aim for 6-7 tiles away from anything to make sure I get the greatest results.

Also, I think that the chance of planing a board has been well buffed. Anyone experiencing anything similar?

5 tiles between pile edges or between signposts?

After going through some 40+ piles since the patch I don't believe 5 tiles is enough. In fact at this time I would probably say more than 8 tiles between sign post if you wish to stop random molding from one pile spreading to another.

You must be on a lucky streak, I'm still getting 40-60%

Seriously timber piles need to be fixed, 6 clear spaces all around the piles, on paving in locked fenced area so no foot traffic and still get times when 3 out of 4 piles are mostly moldy, you have 5days+ wait for it to dry then to find it is moldy then the low chance to plane even with 100 Hammer&Nails then oil time and guess what most of the time the boards are warped...

We need a better chance than that.

The whole point my friend is so that it will be difficult as hell for one person to do and make everything. Carpentry now a days reminds me of metal and silk production in h&h, end game materials always have been supposed to be very difficult to make. The next big updates (rumored to be animal husbandry and a mining overhaul) I fully expect to be exactly as difficult and time consuming as this one.

I wouldn't have such a problem with the system if the boards weren't required for some things that I consider to be early-mid game, namely the farm house, wooden chests, and the oil press. The randomness is way too harsh. You're going through a ton of resources just to get a handful of usable materials if you take the product through all 3 stages. I moved to a new location because my neighbor was cutting down the entire forest to build his 20+ timber piles at a time. That HAD been a lovely place to live, now it's nothing more than a clear cut stump field. There needs to be a way to actively control the mold. If the piles could be monitored and moldy boards removed or treated as they come up (something you would do in real life) that would help tremendously.

That is an idea that I can get behind as it could make a mini-game out of things and a resource sink.
