as always claeyt is overwhelmingly full of ****, and in fact slaves in a few northern states + the neutral border states were not freed until many years after the war which nobody ever wants to talk about
the civil war started, as most wars do primarily as an economical war. slavery was what the "cnn" of the day used to conflate and conceal the true issues, which is why the original 7 states were then later joined by another four when the north attempted to invade and slavery was already being phased out long before the rumblings of war even began.
it was absolutely a war over states rights and whether or not the state government would be phased out and replaced by the federal government, the good guys lost. the fact that the culture and politics in this country have remained divided along those same lines to this day speaks volumes. but a canadian anchor baby from cheeseland would not have any understanding of that sort of thing.
