On which client? And kindly copy paste the lines you added to your host file in case some copying error happened like in that other guy's case :)

Welp tbh if i were you i'd do the full tech support routine. In terms of command prompt stuff to do, the usual order i do stuff in when shaking up my connection is

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

then after that restart the router, restart the PC, pray to the old gods and see what happens when you start back up.

Also lots of people have mentioned that there can be issues with administrator rights when saving that file, so make sure it did save properly and that it has the same name now, rather than it having saved as hosts.txt or something.

Without trying, I can tell you this won't work here.

This can be a problem, yes, it is in general a good idea to first make a backup of the old file.

And depending on what you have on your PC and how things are set up, it might be a good idea to start Windows in safe mode (push F8 while booting up to get Windows startup options), to get unobstructed access to your hosts file.

You can ensure that someone's DNS cache isn't stuck with the old settings and doesn't need to be flushed to allow for the hosts file to point to the right IP? I wasn't suggesting that stuff as a standalone solution, merely as a possible fix for the computer still not picking up the hosts file, and the suggested solutions were pulled from microsoft help threads where part of the problems were fixed by aforementioned steps.

But you did not say that. :P

[edit:] And a need to manually flush is kind of rare, actually, compared to the times that any edit to the hosts file instantly works without any further work needed.

Normally the entry at hostfile don't need a flush of dns, because the file is setup in system at first priority.
Means the only issue you can have after altering the file, that the program is still running, like the browser, and has his own cache.
Restarting the program should resolve the problem.

I have to say, i have no clue about windows systems.
At least it is always i told people if they ask me.
But i kow very well, how networking services work at any kind of machine.

So, if you get an problem while editing the host file, you made something else wrong.
If you change the file in said way, it has to work.

If you can Ping the right hostnames, like game.salemthegame.com, then your network services work like intended.
For other problems you have with the client, you have to post an exactly description of the problem itself, so that we maybe can help.

Claeyt here. I'm doing this for the good of the game in an emergency situation Tmeow.

WINDOWS 10 FIX FOR DARKNACHTS WORKAROUND FROM THE WIKI

Windows 10 will not let you save this to the 'hosts' file. It will not let you save it either as an admin, using the secret admin account or even if you turn off the UAC.

To save these 4 lines to the 'Hosts' file:

148.251.44.214 game.salemthegame.com
148.251.44.214 login.salemthegame.com
148.251.44.214 forum.salemthegame.com
148.251.44.214 www.salemthegame.com

Right click on Notepad as an app and choose 'run as admin', then follow the instructions DarkNacht gave earlier and open up the 'Hosts' file in Notepad and copy paste the 'Hosts' file to the other Notepad that you opened as an admin. Add the 4 fix lines DarkNacht gave earlier at the end within the 'Hosts' you have on the Notepad you have open as an admin. Try and save the changes in the second Notepad and when it doesn't let you save it copy the save path it sets up, then close the second Notepad. Lastly choose 'save as' in the first Notepad you are running as an admin and copy paste the save path you copied. Be sure not to save it as a text file so that you can see the 'Hosts' file you're saving over. Then choose to save over the 'Hosts' file and it will be changed. Good Luck.

Kraillith or DarkNacht can you add this to the wiki as a Windows 10 specific fix?

BTW I nominate Kraillith and DarkNacht for special hats for how they stepped up for the game in this time of need. Good job guys.
