Is it just trolling or results of smelting affected by something besides alloying artifacts and the ratio of ore / lime?

The game replaces one ore with one bar of whatever. If you calculate it perfectly, you can place a single silver ore in the place where the bar will be and iron or something everywhere else and get your one bar per one ore. It's pretty tricky, but you can probably figure it out yourself pretty well.

this was nerfed like 18 months ago, you can still get lucky by putting the ore in the slot that gets chosen but it still will cycle without warning through four slots on average. there is no "system" other than having a high alloying set and using proper lime ratios.

you may get a lucky streak, but just like the various martingales for playing roulette ultimately there is no long term viability which is why ore sells for half of what it used to because a 50% success rate is about as good as it gets.
