Ok my question is why was this information with held till now? I mean we have to wait 5 and half real life days for the wood to dry then there is a chance, cause of placement the wood will get moldy and non-useable (except as wood chippings) Yes I know this is only closed beta and yada yada yada blah blah blah. And that there is a certain way each game is beta tested and new content released,But to wait 5 days in order to build something and the good chance that something goes amuck, this does seem a little excessive don't yah think?
Do not get me wrong here I do love the carpentry system and the new items added. But being gamers regardless of MMORPG, FPS, ect want instant gratification, I do understand we are limited to the time period 1692 I think, but I am sure they had some sort of system even then better than laying lumber out in the open to dry,the only option i can think of based on the time period is ( place it in a heating system of some sort to prevent mold. an oven like the smoker?) or rework the system. But over all not a overly bad system times just need to be reduced or another method to dry wood should be thought up. how about Kiln drying?

Seriously, how close is too close? With the time it takes for dry, finding out by trial and error doesn't look like a fun thing.

What part about reading the tool tip that explained this to you did you find difficult?

A lot of whining in this thread, if you guys had read the tool-tip you wouldn't have had to wait 5 1/2 days to figure out that they need to be placed away from other objects.

If I was to make a suggestion it would be to change the rate slightly. I only got 10 boards out of a timber pile that didn't have anything around it for 2-3 spaces and it was only a coal clamp that was near it. My other piles are a bit further away from everything so I'll see the result when they are finished. Just feels like a bit too harsh of a penalty.

"Well away" is a damn vague description.

It is part the fun of course, but to make the biggest content update since turkeys were introduced and then making us wait over 5 days knowing nothing that is just cruel... you could have written a bit more about the houses and sheds....

This is not whining but a legitimate concern, as for the tool tip( I did read it and followed it to the best the game will allow) all 3 piles were at least 5 squares away(Using the CTRL L feature in ENDERS client) from one another, not near anything walls, houses, trees. wide open PAVED space for them to sit on, I would say that would stomp that theory.

Luckily I can laugh at myself and my own mistake for not reading the tooltip initially (I usually don't miss stuff like that) regarding placement, but it now does have me wondering some other things too. Like how close is too close... etc etc.

Also wondering if how close the pile is to a river/lake would affect mold growth, or does "pile placement" only mean distance between objects and other piles? What about the biome-type the pile is placed on or near? A Swamp biome would be humid and promote mold growth on boards - or am I only being paranoid now?

This is exactly why I stack boards in a triangle when I dry them IRL. Hollow centre gives them more air, and with contact points only at the ends rather than all over the board (like in these square piles) there's less chance of mold growth, and even if it does happen more often than not parts of the afflicted boards can be salvaged by sawing off the ends.
