Astute Observation

Postby Penge567 » Wed Sep 02, 2015 6:25 am

I imagine this is a skill that allows you to see some of the skills and abilities of others, so that you know who is actually new to the game and who wants to murder you while you sleep. Probably a higher level skill based on the faith and wisdom, and the cloak and dagger skill. Maybe it could come with a recipe for a detective hat and pipe, so you could read other players in a Sherlock-Holmes-esque style.

This wouldn't work for the game.

Laconic as ever Dallane.

Uncertainty is a big part of this game but I think it's natural to assume that one might be able to judge, with some granularity, the physical characteristics of another person, and maybe other very minor things. I wouldn't necessarily advocate anything like people "flagging" colors like in Ultima, or knowing people's biles exactly, but maybe very broad categories corresponding to certain ranges of humors? You would be able to tell at a glance that this pilgrim, for instance, was weedy and kind of sickly looking (aside from actually being sick, you know, kind of thin?) and maybe some big, raw boned character, looked that way. It wouldn't tell you what the current level of humors out of max was at all, but you could tell the difference between a ****** low humor alt and an actual developed character who was well fed and healthy.

Intentions, whether they were a murderer, well, you'd judge that yourself. Also whether them having "arbitrary level of biles" meant they punched below, at, or above their weight class. Like, a well built and equipped character with combat skills, well, you wouldn't know that from just their build versus a civilian/crafter. They would both look healthy/jacked, it's just one would be good at making food, the other would be good at making your face into hamburger.

That was my idea. It shouldn't be too specific, but just a general description. Like how when you see someone who's killed a man, they have a certain look in their eye. I don't know, I just thought it would make it a little better. It's hard to trust people in the game, but in real life, you can see if they have certain traits which make them appear suspicious. Granted, this is just an idea, and I know it breaks some of the mystery behind the player to player interaction, but it would make it easier for determining if people you meet in the woods should be stopped and talked to, or ran away from.

You know I'm not required to explain how this is a bad idea right?

A big part of salem is not knowing what a persons knows or how strong a person actually is. You take a lot away if you can judge people on their skills or humor levels. Seeing sickness would be interesting but you can already do that when they are throwing up everywhere and making sick noises. Knowing if someone outside your base is a alt or not is a huge strategic move on the part of an aggressor you would be affecting and those pretending to be a alt or lowbie. So yes it wouldn't really fit in this game.

It does help though.

Yeah, Dallane is right, we made a decision a long time ago that we wanted the mystery. You never know what you're going to get when you encounter someone new or see someone wandering around outside your base, and that scariness is a good thing.

If you are new to the game, assume any stranger is dangerous. If you joined an established town, and they helped you train up, then MAYBE you might be stronger...but in general. ..new players take a while to build up their humors while they learn all of the game.
