Control Options & Interface ideas

Postby Troj » Thu Nov 15, 2012 4:28 am

I've been a little bugged about the interfaces and some controls. I was firstly wondering if it would be possible to move the horizontal movement of the camera (which is on Middle mouse atm) and put it on the right-mouse button to make it more easily reached and more comfortable to use. By not moving your right mouse-button and not holding the button down you'd basicly interact with objects just like it is.

Secondly I was wondering if the hitbox on objects could possibly be increased? I've seen many new players being rather annoyed by this fact and they simply dismiss the fact that some items even are interactable, in the beginning.

I also wondered if you could implement the ability to swap tools/weapons in your left & right hand or being able to change clothing with a single click (replacing one item with another to change slots in 1 click, instead of having to drag one item off and then equip the other by dragging it onto your character slot).

And.. is the right-click supposed to walk you? I just feel like that is pretty dull when you're i.e. capturing Tumbleweeds or if you're steering with WASD (would greatly make it easier for WASD players).

I was thinking about if it would be possible to add the colour of your character in the party around the character portrait up in the left corner to make it easier to see what colour you have.

I think it would be really vital for new players to have some way to view different key combinations and controls ingame to be easily viewed.

Sincerely,
Troj Andersen

Also I've noticed that there you cannot Shift+Left-Click items into a construction

shift+mousewheel up or down to put items on a construction sign, or take them off.

Thanks for the information, it would be great if information about controls would be easily obtainable from ingame or so..

I think it's not enough, as it causes problems with multi-purpose materials. For example stone hedges, which require stones, granite and lime. If you placed lime or granite as last in your bags then scrolling materials into stone section part of construction will suck lime / granite. In the end you have to manually drag stones.

Or you could just put the unique items onto the building sign before loading up the generic one.

Unless you are simply building walls, and forgot that stones should go into inventory as last, so after placing new wall section you can scroll granite into the sign, but have to drag stones, or move stones between backpack and inventory. It's not a biggie, but still shift-clicking was possible in H&H :)

Yeah, that was pointed out to the devs many, many moons ago. I'd have thought it would get fixed on the first major client patch. Guess I was wrong.

The problem is that the foraging objects are small, have no hitbox, and due to the way the picking algorithms work, adjusting the size of any hitbox won't work. Adding something like a "pick ring" might be useful, but it does muck up the view, and the devs can be very aesthetic on the looks of the game. This is also very frequently complained about.

I would like to point out that many of the graphics and models are still placeholder. If you compare the old and new UI, you can see the big changes. If you look back through some of the updates, you can see how items have been replaced over time and are either more appropriately sized or much easier to look at. I anticipate nearly all the forageable models to be replaced at some point.

And take this as elitist if you want, but... Game should be game, and the manual should never enter it. If you're too lazy to read the manual before picking up the game, you should find another pastime like watching TV or movies (just avoid those foreign films... they make you read subtitles!) I will agree that it's the height of game development should be to create a game that needs no manual, but really, won't there always be someone, somewhere that won't have a clue as to how to even use a controller? I could go on much, much longer, but I don't think you guys would want to read a whole dissertation. ;)

I'm not completely sure if you are talking about the fact that some objects are "too close to a ledge" and are thereby not pickable, but that's a problem... the character is rather trying to climb down/up the ledge them pick the item up.. And sometimes objects are inside of cliffs not even visible..
I was going to make a thread about objects "hotbox" but might get an answer to it here.
