cant mine clay???

I have a shovel, I am at a clay pit but it will not let me dig it, I can dig the dirt around the pit but cannot dig the clay itself...

You need Pottery and whittling. Also, sure your not on a lime pit rather than clay?

They are very similar but if in lime you will need quarrying.
