Not very likely if the screen is completely black rather than a loading-screen.

The only way I can think of for debugging this is for Safou to get a thread dump of the client process while it's being black.

If you want to have a "nice" debug session, I can find a person or two who can participate you.
That's not resource loading problem, as you, maybe, thought. There are problems with UDP connection.

Safou, try this.
https://www.privatetunnel.com/home/

It provides 500 MB for free, that's enough for test. Just sign up, download and connect to any server (Stockholm preferred I guess). After that all your connections with internet will be tunneled through secrure tunnel, Salem included. If it works - problem with your internet provider and his tunneling protocols, or with your router, which can't those protocols properly. New router, probably, can solve your problem. If it doesn't work - well, that's way too bad.

Edit: And by the way, I forgot about test #1 for this case. If it possible - try to connect your PC to network directly, bypassing your home router.

I'm going to have to say discuss it with loftar. He's the original programmer on the client and should be able to troubleshoot the problem. He should be able to explain how to get that dump he's requesting.

There are design differences--different OpenGL versions being the big one (v1.4 vs v1.5). Wouldn't hurt to check video drivers just to make sure they aren't causing an issue. A hanging driver that isn't crashing would certainly cause this. You didn't mention which OS you are running, so alloin's suggestion might work.

As for the other suggestions, any network issues could be firewall, router, or ISP related. From what I've seen of network issues, you generally get the infinite "Loading..." screen when something isn't working right, assuming you connected in the first place and can create or select a character and enter the world. It could be a block somewhere along the pipe, either via a firewall on the home network or at the ISP. I'm not sure what to say about the poor quality connections, though the bandwidth used by Salem is fairly low. It could be a bad Java installation (had this problem myself).

A similar thing happened a while back, but with some specific German manufactured modems/routers. Screwier things have been known to go down.

Then don't go with the site suggested. Find your own "network tunnel" or proxy site. Many have free trials or are cheap per month. The purely free ones usually have poor connections or transfer rates.

Just to note, if you install the 3 versions of Java properly, it won't (well, shouldn't) hurt anything. Unless you're a developer or trying to maintain legacy apps, there's likely no need for more than one version installed.

Usually when I get a black screen or trees in-game turn white I run CCleaner and have it clean out java files :)

I only keep the newest java installed, but I have no need for legacy compatibility.

Anyways, good luck Safou :D

Well, that's just an VPN service by OpenVPN. For me that's one of most trustful companies in the world, it has 5.000.000 people in community and their soft is used by many commercial structures.

Besides that tunneling thing, have you tried direct connection already?

I'm running on windows 7 , I have an intel i5 that caused me some trouble before in other cases ( not salem , but maybe it's the source of the problem ) . As far as I can tell , it's not network problem . It's dosen't say loading just black screen , after a long period takes me to the "log in" screen . This may come in handy found it while searching my Salem files :

I have Win7 and intel i5 too, there is nothing wrong with it.
I can tell you that's 100% a network problem because I had it in the past. That's not a regular problem which is frequently appears on this forum, when people with slow internet connection are stuck at "Loading..." screen, when their client is downloading missing resources, like new textures for pavements, new creatures, new music etc. That is 50M just to start playing and 100+M in process.

As I told you before, that's because salem client uses UDP for communication with game server, and some routers can't handle recent "****** revolutions" in infrastructure of internet providers. Just try something I had mentioned above already.

Safou wrote:why it's saying haven ?

You mean, "Haven" error? That's because of someone's lazyness. Salem client is based on Haven & Hearth client, and some things remains the same.

I've been using privatetunnel for ages now and I'm very happy about their cheap & excellent service.

it doesn't. It was an old crash for my client, and wouldn't cause any issues with the default.

@MagicMan: if the OpenGL version was not supported, the client would throw an exception, so that'd be most likely pretty obvious, although the black screen without loading does point to a rendering issue.

@OP: are you able to walk around by ctrl-clicking the minimap? I.e. is the client still responsive, or does it hang as well ? Are you able to open up craft recipes ?
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.
