It would make much sense, both in RL and for ingame fun and diversity, if a skilled musician can lower the insanity of others around him.
That would make it so that you would like to have a good musician as a friend or someone you know.
Listening to "good" music, or better say, music that you like, is a good thing to preserve your sanity, salem should be no different.
Further elaborating this:
1.) The musician should always gain sanity while playing (you know, musician like what they do, no matter if it's good or bad)
2.) People around him should gain or lose sanity based on how "good" he plays, whereas being a witch or a pilgrim would mean your character considers different music as good
3.) This effect should be not so easily applicable in Providence due to being prone to exploit, you either need a certain area away from the town center, and only in this area music works or can be played, or no player made music works in providence at all, this would further encourage you to "visit" a "good" concert or gig, and promote further player to player interaction, with all the issues of trust and drama involved
4.) number 2 would mean there needs to be "songs" that can be played, simply implement it as a chain of notes that has to be played in sequence, whereas there is ...say 1 or 2 seconds time to play one note, and being more or less accurate on the timing increases or decreases the effectiveness of the whole "song"
Also, +1 for JC forcing us all to smoke ingame, I bet people will start permadying from prolonged tobacco use in a few patches, so prepare the ingame lawsuits against those tobacco producers!

[edit:]
- Working on fields should reduce insanity
- Any productive work should reduce insanity
- Planting plants in pots should GREATLY reduce insanity
- Holding a turkey poult / squirrel / turtle / ... in your hand and/or inventory should reduce insanity
- Drinking tea of any kind should reduce insanity
- Gluttony... I am not sure of this, but it should either increase or reduce insanity
- Praying in a church should reduce insanity... if you are a pilgrim and not a witch
