He will provide the undetermined amount of medicine you'll need, but also he has the experience to guess the most probable cure. In my case 4 or 5 items were enough. An inexperienced player could spend a lot more than that and still not find cure.
After the cure I avoided Providence, and whenever I go, instead of standing still waiting the city to load you can Ctrl+click the minimap to move away from players. It's a bit trick avoiding being blocked but soon you learn to go around things. You want to move away from every player. This require Ender or Latikai client to see players on minimap.
After you get cured go for indian tracking skill and farm that 700s for the mask, save money on the banker NPC, so it can't be looted. I didn't and was looted when I was around 300s, had to start over again. Anyone can be a witch but so far so good for me, and it was the only option I had, considering my experience and time available.
