I though maybe a torch could scare them off completely or partially. Fireplaces would just make their population in the lit area a bit less.

Reasonable, but if I were to do this I would probably ramp their spawns WAY up, so that its a requirement to have some fires nearby or else you will be plagued by them.

The bigger problem is that it creates a KO loop and the noob player has to figure this out with no wiki (most of the time now) and no hint about it being around his neck.

Darkness KO loops and Bat KO loops are actually pretty tricky if you don't read about bats and Darkness specifically right here on the forum by digging into the forum topics.

Why is the wiki down all the time now? I keep getting questions about disease and bats in town and I can't direct them to the wiki. Is there any way we can get it set up somewhere else so it's not down 90% of the time?

A system message about a bat attaching to you would fix it.

people learning about mechanics would, as well.
what mechanics do you consider important enough that people should figure them out without forums? Should be warned against them/should have their hands held?
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

KO loops (because KO leads to death during Blood Moons) and Permadeath monsters. Basically since we don't have a Wiki anymore, new players have zero ability to find out about these things before they get to them in-game unless they want to wade through 20 pages of misinformation and Dallane.

Just helped a guy this morning. I gave him the broken link that was once the wiki and tried to tell him how to get ingredients for cures. Basically I just told him to randomly check the wiki to see if it's up today at some point.

I was there for the convo and it didn't go like that and you didn't say any of the sort. He was also asking everyone in town not specifically you.
