Bridges, Cranes, and Transportation

Postby Leeroy_Jenkins » Sun Mar 15, 2015 10:24 am

The idea:

Bridges: would come in many models with different usage and need of heavier forged materials but take a lot of them for constructing them.
the 3 types would be simple bridges made of wood and concrete these can use modules like water mills, dams, drawbridges, floodgates, ports for shipping, and many others. then there are the more complex bridges which can be made for crossing cliffs, mountains, buildings, and even linked to stairwells, and archways.
the last one is a rope bridge that could later be used for things like tree house platforms and to cross pits in caves and mines.
Cranes: would come in 3 model types for loading and unloading, excavation and drilling, and architecture construction.
places to construct a crane would be usually on a concrete base or on top of scaffolds then later models can be erected on top of tall structured buildings or cliffs for use of excavation on higher reaches.
Barges: would be another way for traveling in water or to sea transport to other continents or islands. barges can travel in water only but can be lifted by bigger cranes for transporting elsewhere.
Crates: would ideally weigh a ton so it would hold a bunch of furniture or chests or even big barrels that you could not lift without a Dolly or Carriage-Waggon which is essential for land transportation.

Hello, welcome to the forums, I am glad you are enjoying the game so much you feel able to suggest improvements. Please use the search function before you suggest ideas.
Bridges have been suggested many times before and the devs have tried to explain why its not feasible at the present time.
I am not sure I fully understand the need for cranes.
Whilst having barges for water transport would be incredibly useful IRL, in game it isn't that practical as there aren't long rivers and we can fast travel.
Again, I don't understand the need for Crates, we already have chests, but I assume you mean a crate would be like a cart, sled, or row boat, in that we can put a couple of other liftables in it, and then use one of your cranes to lift it, which would make sense if we had any need for barges and cranes, but there simply is no need for long distance trade.
I think wagons are on the cards once we have animal husbandry and thus have animals to pull our wagons.

Row boats are basically barges, and sleds are basically the dolly's you mention.

the dolly and the carriage waggon would lift the crates and big barrels "the things you cannot lift by hand"
the crates hold chests and other storage units
the rivers are not the only thing that a barge could be used for but the sea, oceans, and islands that are far away.
the crane system is not just for lifting crates if you would read i explained the ideas for the different models and uses.
the bridges could come in use not just for crossing rivers but also lakes gorges and even mountain cliffs and tree house platforms.
also think of the add on modules that could be built onto the bridges for many used purposes.
also i never said "i demand this implemented"
it is just an idea for the devs to decide.

Bridges can't be implemented because while the game is displayed in 3D, under the hood it's really 2D so you can't have two solid objects at same X and Y coordinates but different Z because there is no Z.

The whole point of things that you can't lift by hand is that you can't move them.
Oliver_Hops wrote:the crates hold chests and other storage units

so like a sled, as I said.
Oliver_Hops wrote:the rivers are not the only thing that a barge could be used for but the sea, oceans, and islands that are far away.

so like a row boat, like I said.

I have re read your suggestion and still don't see why we need this. I don't see how it would be useful.

Potjeh has given you the full explanation of why it isn't possible, I was hoping you might try out the search feature.
Oliver_Hops wrote:also think of the add on modules that could be built onto the bridges for many used purposes.

As I said bridges aren't possible.

Of course you aren't demanding things only suggesting them. I meant my first line in all sincerity. Please read the list.

Bridges are perfectly possible, just think outside the box or have ugly implementations.

That still doesn't change the fact it has been suggested MANY times before. The obvious implementation is one that works like a localised version of fast travel, but that would be ugly IMO.

I understand that it cannot be implemented now, but later on if something could be done with it like say for a bridge you enter it like you would a house.
basically you are leaving the overworld and the scene changes like it would when you enter a house. so there is no change in height scale then.

So saying it is impossible is unlikely but improbable to how it is implemented.

A barge is nothing like a rowboat
it is meant for making it possible to transport non movable objects like big barrels for example.
the method for this type of water transport would give long distant town to town trades easier.
and yes i know i said chests but i'm talking about bigger ones if they are ever made.
and for land transportation of these would be the carriage waggon which you need horses to pull it
the only way to lift a non movable object is to use a dolly to load it in a crate which then the
crate is then lifted by crane and loaded either on a carriage waggon or a barge for transport.
also cranes for excavation drilling out bedrock, slate, oil and water springs, deep welling and foundations and other materials.
these won't be the kind of cranes you see in modern times but the old ones with good old fashioned steam power :)
the cranes for construction purposes would need a tuned mass damper.

the easiest way to make bridges viable would be as JC has said a few times, by fully manipulating the tile and changing it to a new type of tile. A wooden decking type of tile.

Only water tiles or tiles next to water tiles can be converted.

Requires oiled boards, animal glue, nails.

Basically this OP. The previous dev did a nice job of explaining why a bridge isn't likely to happen.
